If there's an error early in the process (which I handle and .log())

I get an ERROR to stderr, and then a tag to stdout....

The writer should write the opening tag during init -- this would have a beneficial side effect of making this whole thing more threadsafe.

Good catch. I'll file a bug internally and we'll hopefully get it fixed in the next release.

Writing the tag without writing an event would cause a problem if the EventWriter only wrote to the log and not an actual event.
