A Claude Code plugin that helps single W-2 filers calculate their federal tax return and file for free at Free File Fillable Forms.
Named after the discontinued IRS Form 1040-EZ, which served exactly this demographic before the IRS retired it in 2018.
- Single filer (not married)
- No children or dependents
- W-2 wage income only (no freelance, 1099s, investments)
- Renter (no mortgage or property tax)
- May have federal student loans (1098-E)
- Tax Year 2025
If your situation is more complex, EZFile will tell you and recommend a CPA or full-service tax software.
The quickest way to install EZFile:
# Open the plugin browser and search for "ezfile"
/plugin
# Or install directly
/plugin install ezfile@stat-guy-ezFile# 1. Clone the plugin
git clone https://github.com/stat-guy/ezFile.git ~/ezfile
# 2. Launch Claude Code with the plugin loaded
claude --plugin-dir ~/ezfileTo load EZFile automatically every session, add the marketplace to your Claude Code settings:
/plugin marketplace add stat-guy/ezFile
/plugin install ezfile@stat-guy-ezFileOnce installed, run /ezfile:explain standard deduction — if EZFile responds with a plain-English explanation, you're all set.
Watch EZFile process a W-2 and calculate a complete federal return in real time:
return-demo-process.mp4
A sample W-2 is included in the repo so you can test EZFile without using real tax documents:
/ezfile:file-taxes ~/ezfile/Sample-W2.pdf
The sample contains fictional data — no real personal information.
The returns/ folder contains a completed return generated from the sample W-2, so you can see exactly what EZFile produces:
- summary-2025.md — Human-readable return summary with every line item, tax brackets, and state/local breakdown
- return-2025.json — Machine-readable return data (all W-2 fields, Form 1040 lines, bracket detail, state, and local)
This sample return was calculated from Sample-W2.pdf for a fictional employee (Elizabeth A Darling, University of Pittsburgh) resulting in a $4,404.60 federal refund.
/ezfile:file-taxes ~/Documents/my-w2.pdf
This single command:
- Reads your W-2 (PDF or image)
- Extracts and validates all box values
- Masks your SSN (only last 4 digits shown)
- Asks a few intake questions (date of birth, student loans, tips, overtime)
- Calculates your complete Form 1040 line by line
- Shows your refund or amount owed
- Provides a filing guide for freefilefillableforms.com

- SSN masking: Full SSNs are never stored or displayed. Only the last 4 digits are shown.
- Network blocking: Hooks prevent any network commands (curl, wget, etc.) from running.
- PII protection: Hooks block SSN/EIN patterns from appearing in web searches.
- Output scanning: Written files are scanned for accidentally exposed SSNs.

EZFile is a tax calculation assistant, not a licensed tax preparer or tax advisor. It does not file your taxes -- you must file yourself at freefilefillableforms.com or another IRS-approved method. Review all numbers carefully before entering them. You are responsible for the accuracy of your tax return. For complex situations, consult a CPA or enrolled agent.
