Utilizing PC gpu to help with thumbnail generation?

Hi!
I absolutely love this project. I have no idea why plex does not use hardware acceleration for this or intro+outro detection. Anyhow, I've got a massive library and my poor intel arc cant handle it all :'). I was wondering if there is a way to utilize my pc's 5090 gpu to help with the load. Kinda like how you can have tdarr nodes in multiple devices on the same network to help with the transcoding.

Hi @zazabozaza, do you mean, have this support intro+outro detection?

I can easily add it.. if someone tells me how to do that with ffmpeg and what needs to be send to the plex api.. I just cannot find any info on it.

I wish I could help with the intro/outro detection, but I honestly don’t have the foggiest clue where to start — I just thought it would be an awesome feature! I’ll ask around and see if I can find anything helpful 🙂

Regarding using my PC’s GPU: I installed the image via Docker on Windows and connected it to my Plex config over SMB. There seems to be some kind of permissions issue though, because the container can’t see the files in the SMB directory. I’ll play around with it a bit more and see what I can figure out.

I don't have plex generate on my plex machine "unraid" since it only have a igpu.

So i just use my windows machine with 5090 and docker desktop connected using SMB, it was quite the hassle to setup with either permission issues or slow speed, the old scrip before moving to docker worked perfectly.

Im neither good with perm, docker or how smb works so i cant say if anything i did is the correct way but it works

The permission problem for SMB / network locations seems to be on how docker desktop works with WSL2

Neither of the following worked
volumes:

• D:/media:/media:ro "D is a smb location"
  or using the UNC path directly
  volumes:
• //NALLENSERVER/data/media:/media:ro

Tried multiple things like adding the location to file sharing inside docker desktop settings

Only way i could get it to work was to do something like this

    volumes:
     - nallenserver_media:/media:ro
volumes:
 nallen_media:
   driver: local
   driver_opts:
     type: cifs
     device: "//NALLENSERVER/data/media"
     o: "username=admin,password=pass123,vers=3.0,uid=99,gid=100,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777"

This made it work but using cifs seems to limit the network speed to 100Mbps making it slower than just using the igpu

Solution was to skip the windows layer and go directly to the WSL2 ubuntu.
i use this in the compose

    volumes:
      - /mnt/nallenserver/media:/media:ro
      - /mnt/nallenserver/plex:/plex:rw
      - /mnt/c/Users/Nallen/plexgen-config:/config:rw

Then inside the WSL2 distro i did the following
Make the folders
Create a credential file for the smb username/pass
Add the mounts using fstab
Enable systemd so fstab starts on startup

Finally to start the container i have to run
wsl docker compose up -d
instead of
docker compose up -d

Could do a step by step if there is any interest

Anyway after that it seems to work perfectly, done 44 jobs so far :)

well i do have the "Dolby Vision Profile 5 thumbnails may show a green overlay" warning that i cant figure out but haven't had the time to look at it

I did some research and created this #157

I'll look into it in the future, prob 4-6 weeks out tho as i'm time poor atm.
