Bottom bar buttons have a very small hitbox on iOS

On iOS, only a limited region around the Äh … button is selectable.

On Android the complete area is selectable.

This is the quest form on an Android device, and you may tap from the left of the Word “Äh“ up to the grey line.

On iOS, you can tap only near the word “Äh ..” (note the light grey within the red square).

This is StreetComplete v63.x. The behavior of StreetComplete v64 is the same in iOS and Android.

The UI has simply been changed from v63 to v64.

The "Äh …" button now aligns to the left, while all the other answers align to the right.

The design is consistent with how button (bars) are designed in other places in Material design. I.e. normal buttons aligned to the right. Since "Äh..." is a special option and always there, it is placed at the other end to distinguish itself from the others and make it more similar to the "…" button in overlays.

If I were to break with the pattern, then consequently e.g. the buttons in the dialogs should be made to follow a different style as well.

We currently use Material2 for the UI design. Material2 is now unmaintained, so sooner or later we'd need to migrate to Material3 (Material You Expressive), or something else. I mention this because I myself am also not that content with some parts in Material2, one of those is the button placement in dialogs (and other button bars), I like the iOS style more. But in Material3, I find even more things badly designed. I am really not fond of Material3. So, I don't know.
I'd like to defer thinking about this and for now just adhere to the design language we use, and use it consistently.

I have no idea about those Material thingies, but I find new design in v64-alpha1/2 to be an UX downgrade -- yes / no buttons are much smaller then before, to the point that when my thumb is near the screen, I cannot even see which button is about to be pressed (as my thumb covers both of them -- and Samsung Galaxy S23+ is not exactly a tiny phone, nor do I think I have excessively large fingers).

I'm additionally extra concerned that when winter comes (i.e. gloved hands use), those buttons will become unusable (i.e. too error prone).

I found v63 design (with much bigger buttons) to be significantly more usable. How that previous UI can be accomplished and yet be consistent and following whatever UI standard it needs to follow is left as an exercise to the designer¹ 😅

Footnotes

1. i.e. it is totally outside my expertise, so I can't really suggest how to do things; just note that UI was more usable before, so something should IMHO be improved to repair that regression. ↩

I've made the min size for these button considerably larger now
