Device open failed, no devices found

Hi,

I am running using OpenNI from https://structure.io/openni as well as libfreenect from https://github.com/OpenKinect/libfreenect running on Linux Mint 18.1 with kernel 4.4.0-71-generic with a Kinect v1 model 1414. I am having problems running the NiViewer and the SimpleViewer. The openni1 examples work but not those for openni2. I have tried everything I can find on google to get them going, I can also make both of them no problems just I keep getting errors that the Kinect cannot be found. I have tried all of the following and all linked pages:

I have been at this now for a solid week and would really appreciate some help to get this going,
