Yoda hands-on tutorial

DOI

This is the lesson repository for the Yoda hands-on tutorial. This tutorial is meant to explain and experience the typical workflows for handling data and metadata in Yoda. It can be taught to researchers and data stewards new to Yoda. Access to a Yoda instance is needed for the hands-on exercises.

Maintainers

This tutorial is developed by the SURF Data Management Services team that hosts several Yoda instances in the Netherlands. It is currently maintained by Eduard Klapwijk.

How to use this tutorial

These online materials are free to use for anyone who wants to learn more about research data management in Yoda. You can view the workshop pages including exercises.

For instructors who want to teach the tutorial, you can change the default Learner view to Instructor view (in the right upper corner of the page). This will give you tips about how to teach the lesson. The following preparations are necessary to work with the materials in Yoda:

  • Create two Research Groups in Yoda:

    1. One group called research-tutorial-unsup for the unsupervised workflow. Make sure you invite workshop participants to this group and that they are also added to the datamanager- group in the same category.

    2. Another group called research-tutorial-sup for the supervised workflow in a separate Yoda category. Invite workshop participants to this group as well, but do not add them to the datamanager- group in this category. You can add participants acting as a data steward temporarily to the datamanager- group during the workshop.

  • Prepare a folder with a picture of the dress. It should be in the Vault area and workshop participants should have access to it. Also make sure that the words “Mondrian” or “Yves” are present in the metadata, but not in the file or folder names. You can use the folder published on GitHub to prepare the folder in Yoda. Make sure the dataset is in the Vault and removed from the Research area in Yoda.
