Purpose

Pair of CLI utilities to export Git repositories to single text files and import them back. Enables easy sharing of entire repository structures via email or other mediums without archive files. Preferred approach is human-readable export format; legacy JSON-lines format also available.

Architecture

  • Export-Import paired design: Bidirectional conversion between filesystem and portable format
  • Human-readable format (preferred): Structured text with directory headers, file metadata, timestamps, and sizes
  • Legacy JSON-lines format (archived): Machine-oriented variant in scripts/old_version/ for reference
  • Text + binary handling: Text files shown plaintext, binaries base64-encoded
  • Hidden file filtering: Skips dotfiles and .git directories in preferred version
  • Error handling: Marks errors in output, prints to stderr
  • Zero external dependencies: Uses only Python standard library (tested 3.8+)

Dependencies

  • None (Python 3.8+ stdlib only)

Key Features

  • Repository export to single human-readable text file
  • Repository import/restoration from export file
  • Binary file handling via base64 encoding
  • Directory structure preservation
  • Metadata retention (timestamps, sizes, permissions conceptually)
  • Zero external dependencies
  • CLI interface via sys.argv
  • Comprehensive error reporting
  • Legacy support for JSON-lines format
