Phobia Wallet v4.10.0-beta.3 - Beta 3

Phobia Beta 3 — a pre-release. Beta copies on Windows and Linux find it by themselves.

Beta 2 was tagged from the same code but its build stopped before the APK and checksums were attached; this is that release, complete.

What's new

The phone gets its own Tor and Monero. The APK now carries the Tor Project's Android Tor and the Monero project's Android monero-wallet-rpc, each checked against its project's signed checksums. Settings → Privacy → Tor works as on the desktop — the same kill-switch, a separate circuit per kind of request — and XMR shows its balance and sends on the phone. Orbot still works if you prefer it.

Privacy fixes from a readiness audit (all found by our own review; details in SECURITY/VULNERABILITY_HISTORY.md):

• the local Monero service now has a login (it had none — High);
• Tor circuits are really separated per purpose (they were not);
• a fake "USDT"/"ETH" token is worth nothing instead of the real coin's price;
• the price list and the Home balance chart no longer reveal which coins you hold;
• Android keeps the Tor-only kill-switch across restarts; a socks4:// proxy no longer resolves names locally.

Money shown right, at once: figures always in the currency they are labelled with (chart included), the Home market card shows coins, balances appear as each chain answers, everything saved atomically.

Updates: Linux installs an update with one click (like Windows); the phone tells you when a new APK is out.

Please note

• Android, Beta 1 → Beta 3: one reinstall. Beta 1's APK was signed with a one-off key, so Android will not install Beta 3 over it. Make sure your 24 words are written down, uninstall Phobia, install Beta 3 and import the phrase. From now on every update installs over the old copy.
• Windows still says "unknown publisher". The signature proves the file is untouched since the release workflow signed it; check the thumbprint above. A certificate from a certificate authority will replace the self-signed one.
• Monero on the phone scans the chain on first use — keep the app open until the balance appears.
• No external security audit has been done yet (AUDIT_STATUS.md).

Phobia Wallet v4.10.0-beta.2 - incomplete, superseded by Beta 3

Incomplete — superseded by Beta 3.

This build stopped at the release workflow's APK signature check: it looked for an older apksigner wording and read no fingerprint, although the APK was signed with exactly the published key. The Windows and Linux files below were attached before that; the Android APK and the SHA256SUMS checksum list were not, so the wallet's updater will not install this release, and you should not either.

Beta 3 is the same code, complete — every file signed, attested, checksummed, with an SBOM. Download it from its release page.

Phobia Wallet тАФ Beta 1

Umbrella is now Phobia. Same wallet and same recovery phrase, with a new name and a new design. This is a beta: a pre-release for people who want the new wallet now. A 4.9.0 copy does not update to it by itself, so download it below.

This build replaces the first Beta 1 upload. It adds the Android app, swapping between any coins, staking from the wallet, Nano sends, a balance chart that follows the pointer, Settings search in every language, faster charts, and file names that say "Beta 1".

What is new

• Phobia for Android (beta). The same wallet тАФ keys, signing code, coins and pages тАФ laid out for a phone: the balance with its 24-hour move, the portfolio chart under your finger, Receive / Send / Swap / Buy, your assets with 7-day lines, a market overview, and a crystal button for quick actions. Seed and key screens cannot be screenshotted or recorded, and Android backup is off. New Ice theme (Phobia blue), the phone's default.

• Swap any coin for any coin, each on its own network. Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Zcash, Ethereum and its networks, BSC, Avalanche, Polygon, TRON and its USDT, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Stellar, TON, Cosmos, Monero, Nano and Decred. The route is chosen by trust and named before you pay:

  • THORChain: nobody holds your coins.
  • NEAR Intents: a smart contract holds them for the swap and refunds you if it cannot be filled. It adds a 0.25% fee without a partner key.
  • Exolix: an exchange that holds the coins for the minutes of the swap. It is only used for Monero, Nano and Decred, and the screen says so in a warning colour.

  Every payment except THORChain deposits from BTC/LTC/DOGE/BCH/ETH goes through the normal Send review and password, and the swap is followed until it is done.

• The balance chart follows the pointer. Each point shows what your coins were worth at that moment, when it was, and the change since the start. A wallet of stablecoins draws flat.

• Settings search works in every language. It searches every Settings card and takes you straight to the one you picked.

• Easier to use: a "Back to top" button on long pages, notes on Swap and Buy crypto that can be closed, and a wallet total that always counts the whole wallet.

• Stake TRX, SOL and ATOM from the wallet. Freeze and vote on TRON, a stake account on Solana, a delegation on the Cosmos Hub; claim, unstake and withdraw on the same screen. Every action is checked and signed here and confirmed with your password, like a send.

• Faster: the wallet opens the moment the password is right (balances fill in behind it), a background refresh no longer greys out Send or Settings, and the app starts in under a second.

• Connect, rebuilt in the wallet's style, with what every watched address and exchange holds.

• The official Telegram channel is now t.me/PhobiaStat.

• Nano sends, with no fee. Each block carries a few seconds of proof of work computed on your computer. A live node accepts the wallet's signatures and work.

• New name and design. A crystal logo, a midnight-violet theme, and a lock screen that says something new each time.

• One coin across networks. USDT, USDC and ETH each show as one row with their networks underneath. Receive asks which network to use.

• Market: an exchange chart with candles, volume and a crosshair. Blockchains and tokens are listed separately.

• Faster:

  • Charts open already drawn.
  • The balance chart reads only the coins you hold.
  • A theme switches in a blink.
  • The balance is read again when you come back to the window.

• Activity and history: an icon for every event, day headers, and history for Dogecoin, Zcash, Nano and Decred.

• Wallets: switching works every time, and you can show every wallet's balance and the total.

• Linux carries Tor again, with Tor and Monero pinned by hash.

Known limits of this beta

• Android: no Tor and no Monero service on the phone yet (both ship with Windows and Linux), so the phone reads each chain directly and the servers see your IP; XMR balance and sends need the desktop. No automatic updates тАФ install a newer APK over the old one. This APK is signed with a key made for this build: if a later APK will not install over it, write down your recovery phrase, uninstall, install the new one and import the phrase.
• Decred can be received (including from a swap) but not sent yet. Polkadot has no swap route right now.
• Monero sends need the bundled Monero service. It is included here; some antivirus tools flag it as a false positive.
• Staking from the wallet covers TRON, Solana and the Cosmos Hub; Ethereum, Cardano, TON and Polygon are described, not staked here yet.

Phobia Wallet v4.9.0 - every coin sends, and the code opens up

Every coin the wallet shows can now send

Stellar (XLM), NEAR, XRP, Cosmos (ATOM), Polkadot (DOT) and Solana tokens тАФ both token programs, PayPal USD included тАФ join the coins that could already send. Each one's transactions are built to match the network's own reference implementation, byte for byte where that can be checked:

Sends are followed to the end. A transaction is reported as sent only once the network really holds it. If an answer is lost, the wallet says so and never offers a retry that could pay twice тАФ Solana sends used to do exactly that, and no longer do.

Honesty where it costs us: a Token-2022 token whose issuer can freeze or seize it says so on the review. Tokens whose rules could change what a transfer does тАФ a transfer fee, a transfer hook, a paused mint тАФ are refused in plain words instead of sent and hoped for.

The code is open

• MIT licence for the code; the name and logos stay under the trademark policy.
• Security Center now states plainly that malware on your PC can still reach an unlocked seed, and points at the hardware-wallet path.

Phobia Wallet v4.8.2 - the gold design, Taproot and PayJoin

4.8.2 is 4.8.0 тАФ now for Windows too. The Windows builds of 4.8.0 and 4.8.1 stopped where they should: this release checks the Tor and Monero it bundles against their projects' own signatures, and the newer gpg on GitHub's build machine could not read the Windows paths it was given, so the key never imported. Nothing was shipped unverified. The check itself now runs on Windows for every change, not only on release day.

pays with PayJoin, hands a payment to another wallet as a PSBT, sends any token you hold, and reads five
more chains. And the reason so many balances said "server did not respond" is gone тАФ because the
server usually had.

  desktop icon keeps its own colours, and it is new.

  sparklines and the movers. The curve passes through every price and never overshoots a high or a low
  the data did not reach. Up or down is still said in green or red, by the numbers.

Balances you can trust

• A request that timed out was treated as if you had cancelled it. One slow explorer aborted the
  whole Bitcoin scan, the backup servers were never asked, and the other chains' refresh stopped with it.
• Busy servers (429) are waited out and asked again, a few requests at a time; a definite answer is
  taken at once.
• Each refresh asks far less. A full walk of your addresses runs on unlock and every 30 minutes; in
  between, the wallet re-reads the addresses it has used plus three past them.
• Cardano read as unavailable on every new wallet: an unused address is an empty answer, which is a
  real zero. Zcash is asked every ten minutes instead of every minute. Monero with its service
  off now says so, instead of blaming a server.
• Locking forgets the last wallet's scans, so the next wallet тАФ or the hidden one тАФ can never have a
  send planned from someone else's coins.

Bitcoin

• Taproot (BIP86) wallets are found and spent, change included. Receive stays native SegWit.

Phobia Wallet v4.7.0 - you choose which server sees your addresses

Your keys never leave your device. That is true, and every wallet says it.

What almost none of them say is that a wallet still has to ask somebody what is on the chain тАФ and on a public chain, asking means handing over the address. Tor hides your IP. It does not un-send an address.

This release is about that.

You choose which server sees your addresses

Bitcoin, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Solana, TON, Tron, Cardano and Monero can each be pointed at a different company, or at a node you run. Settings тЖТ Privacy.

Monero had one node compiled in тАФ the same for every user, named nowhere, unchangeable. It now names the node, offers alternatives, and takes your own, including a .onion.

Three rules, enforced rather than suggested:

• A plain http:// server is refused тАФ choosing your own endpoint for privacy and then sending addresses in clear would be worse than not choosing.
• Credentials in a URL are refused тАФ every hop along the way logs the URL.
• Once you pick a server, there is no falling back to ours. Rerouting your addresses to the default is exactly what choosing was meant to prevent.

Who this wallet talks to

A full list: every server, who runs it, why it is contacted, and what it learns тАФ sorted so the ones handed your actual addresses come first. The build fails if a server appears in the code without appearing on that list.

Private send, as one switch

Tor, the kill-switch, waiting for bootstrap, narrowing inputs, a fresh change address тАФ one switch instead of a checklist nobody remembers. Beside it, what no switch can change. Monero shows an empty to-do list and its limits all the same.

Fixed тАФ money that was going missing from the display

• Bitcoin Cash and Dogecoin lost their own change. Read one address deep, so after a send the displayed balance dropped to whatever was left on the first address. The money was never at risk; the number was wrong, in the direction that makes people think they have lost funds.
• A fresh receive address per payment now works on BCH and DOGE too.
• Bitcoin balances no longer fail when one public explorer rate-limits.
• A failed Send preparation now says so on the Send screen тАФ it used to report into the title bar, so pressing Review appeared to do nothing.
• Dogecoin's dust limit was Bitcoin's, off by more than two orders of magnitude; a send could be refused by the network because the change was dust.
• The Max button did nothing on six assets тАФ no fee reserve, so it offered the whole balance and the send failed for want of a fee.

Security

• Your address book is now encrypted. It was plain text, and it survived a wallet delete. After the seed it is the most revealing file the wallet keeps тАФ it names who you pay.
• Unlock guessing now costs time. Three free mistakes, then the wait doubles to a 15-minute cap, persisted across restarts.
• "No telemetry" is now a build failure, not a sentence on a screen. Nineteen analytics packages, their API shapes, disabled certificate validation, and any log file all break the build.

Coins

Jetton balances on TON, including USDтВо тАФ which rendered as $0 before, because Tether on TON calls itself USDтВо and no price feed recognises that. Linea (send and receive) and zkSync Era (balance only тАФ its fees do not work like Ethereum's, and the wallet says so instead of stranding a transfer).

What is honestly not done: reproducible builds, signed binaries, CoinJoin, PayJoin, Taproot, Dandelion++, hardware wallets. All named in the threat model as open gaps rather than implied away. Malware running as your user is marked HIGH and unmitigated тАФ no desktop wallet survives it.

• Address discovery used to make one request per address, one after another тАФ a fresh wallet paid 21+ round-trips per chain before showing anything. Addresses are now checked in parallel, without asking the block explorer about a single address more than before.
• Prices and balances load together instead of one waiting for the other; Bitcoin and Litecoin scan at the same time.
