Ideas for components:

USB Transceiver: http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/usb-transceivers/8290526/ (Might be something interesting possible with this device as it has GPIO... Perhaps devise a way to get it to control the reset and flash pins of the ESP?)

Pogo Pins mounted horizontally to hole the device in-situ (Might need a 3D printed jig to help with accurate positioning for assembly). It's one of the cheapest around too (apart from the CH340 and knock-offs of FTDI devices. But the CH requires quite a few external components and a crystal oscillator).
