Volkswagen cuts, or at least changes access !

Since Thursday May 28 my carconnectivity installation can no longer access the VW server.

As one may read there, the services are disconnected per week 21 - that is the previous week, the date fits.

I searched the Cariad website and found a nasty surprise. As it appears, access to the new (?) API and its documentation requires a so called "ONE BUSINESS" account which is verified by Cariad - and it is mandatory that the account holder has "power of attorney" to sign contracts for his enterprise.

So apart from technical questions, Cariad apparently aims to sell access to the data. No mention of "private user" was given, and also home automation or open access is not any topic relevant for them.

I have really hard time to understand VW approach and lack of communication from their side make it even worst. I have withdraw all my data sharing consents to VW until I see some reason to share my car data again.

Additional context / fallback status:

I initially came from the Home Assistant Volkswagen Carnet / Volkswagen Connect issue, but this is relevant here too because CarConnectivity-connector-volkswagen appears to be affected by the same Volkswagen-side API/authentication changes.

As a fallback, I also tried to use the Volkswagen EU Data Act route, hoping to retrieve at least some read-only vehicle data while the regular Volkswagen API integrations are broken.

Unfortunately, this fallback does not currently seem usable either.

I received an official Volkswagen Group Info Services service outage notification for EU Data Act requests. According to that notification:

So, for anyone considering EU Data Act as a temporary workaround while the Volkswagen API / CarConnectivity connector is broken: it is probably not worth trying right now, as the EU Data Act route also appears to be broken on Volkswagen Group Info Services’ side.

This does not explain the CarConnectivity authentication issue itself, but it may help avoid spending time on EU Data Act as a fallback while Volkswagen’s own data extraction infrastructure is currently returning empty files.

Well, in view of the fact that the EU Data Act is German federal law starting exactly on May 30, Volkswagen is currently violating this law. See https://www.recht.bund.de/bgbl/1/2026/157/VO.html

I’m only writing this because, to my surprise, I keep reading everywhere that access to the VW servers is blocked. That would seem to imply Škoda as well. I thought it might be helpful to know that, at least for me, it is still working in real time.

Skoda servers are different, same for Seat Cupra. But you can expect it to change too.

If one of the brands is doing it, I can definitely see a world in which it's designed to be a generic solution for all brands.

I bet there's someone at Skoda going "I told you the Home Assistant crowd wouldn't take this sitting down" 🤣

Skoda is actually a bit different. They are interested in the feedback of the drivers. It is not a surprise to me how they handle this and makes me happy to drive an Enyaq myself.
