[Feature Request] Tasks in Notes + Global Kanban

Tasks and Notes currently feel too separated.

In practice, almost any note can become actionable, so having a dedicated Task note type adds unnecessary complexity.

Proposed Solution

Allow any note to optionally enable task functionality through a Task button/toggle.

This would avoid needing separate Task notes or complex links between Tasks and Notes.

Global Kanban

Replace or merge the current Tasks page with a global Kanban view.

Default columns:

To-do	In Progress	Completed

Columns should ideally be customizable.

1. Users could right-click any note or folder from any workspace and select:

3. The item would then appear in the To-do column.

It could also support multiple global Kanban boards, allowing users to create separate boards for different workflows, projects, or contexts.

Notes and folders in the Kanban could also have a different color depending on the workspace they come from, making it easy to visually distinguish workspaces at a glance.

Why

This would create a much simpler system:

• Notes contain content and optional task functionality.
• Kanban provides a global workflow view across all workspaces.
• Notes and folders can be organized together.
• Workspace colors make items easy to identify visually.
• No separate Task note type is required.

My partner just started university and uses different workspaces for different courses. One of the first things she told me was that they were asked to organize their work this way, and she needed a simple way to organize all her notes in one global Kanban.

Hi @gravelfreeman, thanks for the detailed request, and the university use case makes it very concrete.

I think a big part of what you describe already exists, it is just not obvious enough. Let me walk through it, then say what I think is actually missing.

What already works today

Tasks inside any note
You do not need a Task note to have actionable items. Any regular note can contain checklists, and those checklists show up on the Tasks page. Open Tasks and enable "Display tasks in notes" to see them alongside your dedicated task lists. So "notes contain content and optional task functionality" is already the model. The Task note type simply remains for people who want a pure list without surrounding content.

Kanban view
Any folder can be opened as a Kanban board (right-click a folder, "Kanban view"). Its subfolders are the columns, so columns are fully customizable: create a folder with "To-do", "In Progress", "Done" subfolders and you have exactly the default layout you describe. Cards can be dragged between columns, and each column has a "completed" section. You can create as many boards as you want, one per folder.

Adding a note to a board without moving it
This is what shortcuts are for. Right-click any note, "Create shortcut", and pick the Kanban folder as the destination. The note stays in its course folder and appears as a card on the board. That is effectively "Add to Kanban".

What is genuinely missing

Reading your request against that, the real gap is that boards and shortcuts are scoped to one workspace. If each course is a workspace, you cannot build a single board that shows notes from all of them.

I would rather not remove the Task note type: it is used by the API, exports, the AI assistant and Git sync, and I have to admit I use it a lot this way. If I change that, I will have to manage existing other users tasklists also.
