Map Downloader 📡🗺️

Out in a field there's no internet, so the radio can't stream map tiles. This fixes that: pick your area, pick the zoom levels, and it downloads the tiles, cuts them to the size the widget wants, and lays out the MAPS and WIDGETS folders ready to drop on your SD card. 💾 It also writes the matching main.lua for the SatMap Widget, already set to the right tile size and zoom range.

It all runs in your browser. On Chrome or Edge it can write straight to the SD card; on anything else it hands you a ZIP. 📦

🧭 How to use it

1. 📍 Find your spot. Search for a place, or just click the map to drop the centre.
2. ⭕ Set the radius. How far around the centre you want covered. Bigger radius + higher zoom = a lot more tiles, so don't go mad.
3. 🔍 Pick zoom levels. 13–16 is a sensible everyday range. Low zoom = wide but blurry, high zoom = sharp but tiny coverage. Grab a couple so you can zoom on the radio without running out of map.
4. 🗂️ Tick the map types you want (below). Several at once is fine — they all download together for the same spot.
5. ✅ Hit go, and either let it write to the SD card or grab the ZIP.

🛰️ Map types

You're not stuck with one look. Tick as many as you like and each lands in its own folder:

• 🛰️ Satellite — real imagery, my default.
• ⛰️ OpenTopoMap — contour lines, nice for hills.
• ✈️ Airspace — for staying out of trouble (needs an OpenAIP key, there's a field for it).
• …and a few more depending on what's available.

On the radio you flip between them with the [MAP] button, and any type that has no tiles where you are gets skipped automatically. 👍

💾 What ends up on the card

sets.txt also stores the centre of each area so the widget can show the map before it gets a GPS fix — it stays on your SD card with the tiles. 💾

🔧 Just the widget

Already have tiles and only changed the widget? There's a Tiles-only option (tiles + sets.txt, no main.lua), and the other way round, a way to regenerate just main.lua without re-downloading everything.

⚠️ After any widget change: drop the new main.lua into WIDGETS/SatMap/ and reboot the radio. Tiles update without a reboot; the script doesn't.

🌐 A note on CORS

Some sources (Esri satellite) work anywhere. Others (OpenTopoMap, OpenAIP) can get blocked unless you're on the real site. If a type comes back empty in a browser test, that's usually why — it works fine from the live site.
