SatMap Widget πŸŽ›οΈπŸ“Ά

This is the widget that runs on the radio itself β€” a moving map with your plane on it, plus a telemetry page and a full artificial-horizon HUD, all on the transmitter screen. Built for EdgeTX 2.10.x on colour radios (TX16S and similar). Tiles come off the SD card, so it works with zero signal in the middle of nowhere. 🏞️

SatMap page 1 β€” the map

πŸ“₯ Installing it

  1. Use the Map Downloader to write the MAPS and WIDGETS folders to your SD card.
  2. On the radio, add the SatMap widget to a screen (Model settings β†’ Screens, or the top-bar widget slot β€” depends on your EdgeTX version). Fullscreen it for the real thing.
  3. πŸ” Reboot after any update to main.lua.

If the map area is grey with text on it, that's the widget talking β€” jump to Tile states below.

πŸ“„ The three pages

Tap [PG] (top-right) to cycle through them. [PG] sits in the same top-right spot on every page 🎯, so you can just keep tapping the same place to flip around.

1️⃣ Page 1 β€” Map

Full-screen moving map: your plane, its heading line, the trail behind it, the home marker, and a HUD along the top and bottom with sats, altitude, speed, heading, zoom and distance to home. πŸ—ΊοΈ

2️⃣ Page 2 β€” Map + Graph

SatMap page 2 β€” map, telemetry and graph

Map on the left, a telemetry panel top-right, and a scrolling time graph bottom-right. πŸ“ˆ The graph plots up to three channels (volt, signal, altitude, vertical speed, speed, current) over a window from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. The panel values are colour-matched to the graph lines so you can tell them apart.

3️⃣ Page 3 β€” HUD / Artificial Horizon

SatMap page 3 β€” the HUD

A proper glass-cockpit view ✈️: artificial horizon with a pitch ladder, speed tape left, altitude tape right, heading band across the top, a compass, your live position, and a grid of value tiles at the bottom (battery, current, distance, speed, sats, link, RSSI, TX power). The header shows your model name and TX battery.

πŸ•ΉοΈ Controls

Fullscreen, on page 1:

Input Does
🎚️ Rotary turn Zoom in / out
β–ͺ️ ENTER (short) Toggle FOLLOW / FIX
⏺️ ENTER (long) Open the settings menu
πŸ“„ Tap [PG] Next page
πŸ—ΊοΈ Tap [MAP] Next map type
πŸ‘† Tap the map Hide/show the HUD
βœ‹ Drag (in FIX mode) Pan the map with your finger

FOLLOW keeps the plane centred. FIX lets you pan around and holds still; it snaps back if the plane drifts near the edge.

πŸŽ›οΈ Zoom knob

New: you can drive the zoom straight from a pot or slider instead of the rotary. Open the settings menu β†’ Zoom knob, and pick a source (S1, S2, sliders, or a channel). Now that knob sets the zoom across the map's range. The rotary still works between knob moves, so you're not locked out of it. Set it back to OFF if you'd rather only use the rotary. πŸ”„

βš™οΈ Settings menu

Long-press ENTER to open it. In here: switch page, switch map type, set zoom, pick the zoom knob, toggle FOLLOW/FIX, HUD, trail and heading line, choose the graph window and channels, re-centre on the model, set home, clear the trail, clear the tile cache.

The settings menu

πŸ’‘ If the artificial horizon on page 3 stays flat while you bank the plane, your FC is probably sending attitude in radians. Flip Attitude: DEG/RAD in the menu. Still flat? The pitch/roll sensor names aren't coming through β€” check your telemetry sensors. More in the FAQ.

πŸ’Ύ Your settings are saved

Everything you change in the settings menu β€” page, map type, zoom, zoom knob, graph channels and window, HUD, trail, heading line, attitude DEG/RAD β€” gets written to MAPS/satmap.cfg on the SD card and restored on the next boot. Set it up once the way you like it, and a reboot won't wipe it. βœ… (No SD card, or a write-protected one, is the only thing that'd stop it sticking.)

πŸŸ₯🟦 Tile states

When the map area isn't showing imagery, it tells you why, right on the tiles:

  • πŸŸ₯ "No Tiles Found" on red tiles β†’ there's no map on the SD card for this spot at this zoom. Either you haven't downloaded this area, or you've zoomed past what you downloaded. Grab it with the Map Downloader, or zoom back to a level you have.
  • 🟦 "Loading" on blue tiles β†’ tiles are on the card and being read in. This flashes up for a moment, then the imagery appears. If it stays on "Loading", the files are probably corrupt β€” re-download the area.

More detail: tiles not loading in the FAQ.

πŸ›°οΈ Before a GPS fix

No fix yet? The widget centres the map on the area you downloaded (that centre's saved in sets.txt), so you see your field straight away instead of a grey screen. Once GPS locks, it jumps to the real position. On an old card with no saved centre, it'll just say "waiting for GPS fix" until it locks.

πŸ”§ Troubleshooting

  • 🏷️ Header says "MODEL" instead of the model's name β†’ see the FAQ.
  • πŸŸ₯ Whole map is red "No Tiles Found" β†’ wrong or missing tiles for this area/zoom. Re-run the Map Downloader for where you actually are.
  • 🐒 Radio feels sluggish β†’ drop a zoom level, or use fewer graph channels.
  • πŸ” Changes didn't take β†’ regenerate main.lua, copy it into WIDGETS/SatMap/, and reboot.
