I tried to follow your instructions to solver on a ESP32C3. Result is that I can see some incoming data, the touchscreen works, but I can't control the fan or anything. Basically, symptoms identical to what's reported here:

Using the wiring photo in that issue, I did the same thing- I wired RX/TX to the pin header rather than to a pad.
However, I'm not sure which are the correct places to solder to. I started poking around with a multimeter based on the pinout I found here: https://c1.neweggimages.com/productimage/nb1280/B33YD2203180VGWRG79.jpg
and the TXD0/RXD0 pins on the on-board esp32 are connected to the Tx/Rx pins on the pin header. So I'm not certain what I should be connecting to if not that.
