Increase boot partition size for Arch Linux ARM VM

The 200MB partition is no longer sufficient. When upgrading, I get a:

==> Generating module dependencies
==> Creating gzip-compressed initcpio image: '/boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img'
  -> Early uncompressed CPIO image generation successful

gzip: stdout: No space left on device
bsdtar: Write error
bsdtar: Write error
==> ERROR: Initcpio image generation FAILED: 'bsdtar (step 1)' reported an error
error: command failed to execute correctly

This would save new users from the need to fiddle with their setup. Make it 500MB like most people would set up for Arch Linux.

Now onto fixing my Arch setup 😄

Ran into this issue trying to install btrfs-progs and it failed to create the initramfs on /boot. This needs to be upped to at minimum 500MB.

I've run into the same problem, too. Has anyone found a workaround that lets you resize boot? GParted doesn't want to let me do this from the running system.

I'm regretfully admitting that I've moved my dev environment off of Arch Linux for the time being.

I'd love to return but this upgrade anxiety is seriously unproductive, which is not characteristic of Arch Linux itself (I've been running my homelab server on Arch for over 5 years).

I have also this issue, the /boot size is only 200MB, bump it up to 1GB or so.

You can workaround this by removing linux-firmware-{nvidia,amdgpu,radeon}

Then rm /boot/initramfs-linux* to remove old bloated images.
Then mkinitcpio -P to generate new images which are around 12MB now.

Did that, and while it works, things barely fit.

/dev/vda1       200M  190M   10M  96% /boot

We really just need a new gallery image with a /boot with a reasonable size like 1GB.

Happy to make one if someone could indicate the submission process for a gallery image.

Where is the source or build script for the Arch Linux ARM gallery image?
I’d like to submit a patch to increase the EFI partition from 200M to 512M.

I too was chafing at the undersized boot partition. With the help of Codex I developed a script to resize the partition. Attached is the Runbook that includes the script and an explanation of how to use it.

I tried the script and it generated the archlinux-arm64-utm4-boot1024m.zip but I didn't know how to get the file imported, then I looked at the UTM gallery site and it uses a utm://downloadVM/https://github.com/.../archlinux-arm64-utm4.zip -- so I served the file using python3 -m http.server 8000 and manipulated the url and opened in my browser utm://downloadVM/http://127.0.0.1:8000/archlinux-arm64-utm4-boot1024m.zip and that worked.

I've put up an Arch image boot of 2048MB on Github.

Unfortunately Github doesn't render utm:// URLs, so you can copy and paste this into your browser bar and it'll instruct (and prompt) you if you want to install the image in UTM.

Ah, thanks for giving it a go. For a locally generated archive, you can unzip it and open the enclosed .utm bundle directly in UTM; a local web server is not required. I've updated the runbook to say as much
