Safe Mode + Loss of Bionic font

Hi all,
New to the reader and have an x4. I am trying to read my first book on this device, and it has been a frustrating ordeal so far.
I have now run into a new problem where the device blinks, says "Safe Mode," the font changes, and I lose the Bionic mode entirely. I am using the Bookerly font. Rebooting the device resumes the Bookerly font, but Bionic is gone, and I cannot get it back. Bionic does not work on any book now - even new ones that I have put into the device. Reverting to default /standard fonts also does not fix the issue.

EDIT: Working through re-flashing and editing the ePubs to see if this fixes the issues. Have used optimize mode with epubs + did not work. Will update.

Safe mode turns off all the extra rendering that causes memory issues so it's pretty bare bones. One thing you can try is splitting up long epub chapters/sections. I have a beta build of a new CrossInk companion web app I've been working on for awhile: https://inky.crossink.dev/. In the optimizer settings, check the box for "Split long EPUB sections". The next release of CrossInk should also improve RAM usage as well.

I think the format of the ePub was exactly the issue - too many fonts, too much bloat. I stripped it down, split the chapters, and it fixed the issue. I tried just splitting the long section(s) first, and that wasn't enough. I had to strip the ePub down to bare bones and use one font throughout to get it to stop safe mode. Before this issue, I had the "Chapter needs too much memory" error. Thank you for the inky link. I will use it in the future for long ePub sections.
