Hey Next.js community! 👋

We’ve been working on NextBlock CMS, an open-source (AGPLv3) full-stack CMS framework engineered natively for Next.js 16 (App Router + React Server Components) and Supabase (PostgreSQL).

🧱 The Problem: The "Headless Tax" in Next.js

Like many teams building with modern Next.js, we found traditional decoupled headless CMS setups (Payload CMS, Strapi, Sanity, Contentful) introduce architectural friction:

Schema Duplication: Managing duplicate data models in both the CMS backend and frontend types.
Network Waterfalls: Multi-hop REST/GraphQL client/server roundtrips that delay initial rendering.
The "HTML Sanitization Tax": Parsing legacy raw HTML strings with dangerouslySetInnerHTML on the client, introducing hydration mismatches and hurting Core Web Vitals.

⚡ Architectural Decisions & Technical Highlights

1. Strict PostgreSQL JSONB Trees (Zero HTML Overhead)

Instead of treating content as raw HTML strings, our Notion-style editor (powered by Tiptap) reads and writes structured PostgreSQL JSONB node trees.

Native RSC Mapping: Next.js Server Components recursively walk the JSONB tree to render modular Tailwind components directly on the server.
Performance: Eliminates runtime string sanitization and regex cleanup, hitting 100/100 Lighthouse scores by default.

2. Dynamic DB Theming & Custom Block CRUD (Zero Redeploys)

Theme tokens, global layout variables, and custom block definitions are persisted directly in PostgreSQL tables.
Updates made in the admin UI inject runtime CSS variables into the Next.js root layout with zero code commits and zero Vercel redeploys.

3. 1-Click Free Vercel Deployment

Scaffolds directly to Vercel via our 1-click deploy flow with automated database migrations running during compilation.
Edge-native multi-language (i18n) routing via proxy middleware with zero bundle overhead.

Great architectural direction! Storing structured JSONB trees rather than serialized HTML strings aligns nicely with React Server Components (RSC):

RSC Recursive Rendering vs AST:
Mapping JSONB nodes directly to React Server Components is significantly cleaner than client-side AST parsers (html-react-parser / dangerouslySetInnerHTML). Because the node tree is traversed entirely on the server during streaming SSR, the client receives zero parsing runtime overhead, which explains the clean 100/100 Lighthouse performance.
Runtime Theming via CSS Variables:
Injecting theme tokens as CSS variables at the root layout via SQL table reads is the most idiomatic way to avoid layout shifts (CLS) in Next.js 16. Using style={{ ...cssVariables }} on <html> or <body> prevents client hydration flickers while enabling immediate real-time theming without rebuilds.
