RDM 0.3.12

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 05 Oct 19:12

More file types, an "AI models" category, the extension on the stores, and a full code audit. Nothing to do on your side: update as usual.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.12-x64-setup.msi, or let RDM install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.12 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.12-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.12-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Edge / Brave / Opera / Vivaldi… from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip; Chrome Web Store once reviewed
Firefox / Waterfox / LibreWolf… addons.mozilla.org, from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.8)

New

  • AI models category: .gguf, .safetensors, .onnx, .ckpt, .pt, .pth, .llamafile, .tflite… with its own folder.
  • About 120 more captured formats (video, audio, archives, programs, documents); split ZIP parts (.z01…) always captured. A list saved by an older version receives the new formats once.
  • RDM accepts the extension installed from the Chrome Web Store.

Fixed

  • An update check with an invalid proxy no longer stays on "Checking".
  • The YouTube module goes through the configured proxy.
  • Connection counts and checksums are validated again when the list is loaded.
  • The sidebar's extension status ends with "…" instead of being cut.

Under the hood

Eight-pass audit: dependencies, dead code, typed errors, layered architecture with large files split, JavaScript patterns, mutation testing with new readable tests.

RDM 0.3.11

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Oct 06:53

Security, privacy and robustness after a second full review. Nothing to do on your side: update as usual.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.11-x64-setup.msi, or let RDM install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.11 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.11-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.11-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Edge / Brave / Opera / Vivaldi… from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip
Firefox / Waterfox / LibreWolf / Floorp / Zen… from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.7)

Security

  • Cookies and site logins never travel in clear: a video stream (HLS) or a separate audio track given over HTTPS could send them to an http:// segment of the same site. Not any more.
  • YouTube module: nothing runs unchecked. yt-dlp is installed only if its checksum list carries the signature of yt-dlp's own key (written in RDM). Deno, bgutil and the drawing library bgutil needs are exact versions checked against SHA-256 values written in RDM, and no package's install script runs (one used to download its library without any check). A module installed earlier keeps working; installing it again uses the new checks.
  • Updates: the package is checked again at the very last moment against the fingerprint its signature covers — on Linux by the administrator step itself, from a copy only it can write — so no program can swap it between RDM's checks and the installation.
  • Local bridge: a web page can no longer tell that RDM is installed.
  • VirusTotal: the API key never follows a redirect out of VirusTotal.
  • Proxy: a proxy address RDM cannot use is an error; the quality list, the link check, the file name lookup, VirusTotal and the update check never went through it but around it — no longer.
  • Build: web-ext, which signs the Firefox package, is pinned with its whole dependency tree, and moves to version 10.7 (10 fewer known flaws in its dependencies).

Privacy

  • Clipboard (Windows): what a password manager copies — marked private by it — is not even read.
  • Cookies are shared between subdomains the way browsers do it in more cases: two people's sites on one hosting platform (alice.github.io, bob.github.io) are two sites; a broadcaster's own servers (www.zdf.de, cdn.zdf.de) are one.

Fixed

  • Linux: a long Japanese, Chinese, Russian or emoji title failed with "File name too long" (Linux counts bytes, not characters). Names now fit.
  • A video stream with huge segments could take gigabytes of memory while waiting for its turn: it is now bounded, and a playlist with more than 200,000 segments is refused.
  • A server answering a part of another version of the file (another size) is no longer mixed into the download.
  • The YouTube module, when it takes too long, now ends Deno with yt-dlp (it used to keep running, hundreds of megabytes).
  • RDM builds with Rust 1.99. (0.3.10 was never published: its build stopped on a new warning of Rust 1.99.)

Better

  • The window no longer waits for the disk when a download is added (a network drive, a sleeping hard disk).
  • Browser recordings: the files stay open between chunks (Windows' antivirus used to scan the whole file again at each one); a recording is capped at 64 GB.
  • Long downloads keep a short resume file (finished pieces joined).
  • Install scripts: the Windows one only stops RDM's own copies; the Linux one quotes the program's path correctly whatever the home folder's name.

Checked on Windows 11 and on Ubuntu 26.04 (WSL), with Rust 1.98 and 1.99: the full test suite, the YouTube module installed from scratch with every check (a video's links read), the published 0.3.9 packages verified end to end, and the extension's checks.

RDM 0.3.9

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 20:01

Video streams fixed, less memory, and RDM tested for real on Linux.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.9-x64-setup.msi, or let RDM install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.9 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.9-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.9-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Edge / Brave / Opera / Vivaldi… from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip
Firefox / Waterfox / LibreWolf / Floorp / Zen… from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.6)

Fixed

  • Some video streams (HLS) were refused with "separate MPEG-TS audio track is not supported" although their sound is inside the video: when a stream offers its own sound by default and another language on the side, RDM took the other one. They download now.
  • On Linux inside Windows (WSL), RDM closed at start: WSLg's display server drops its window. RDM now uses the one that works there.

Better

  • Video streams take a third less memory while downloading (137–155 MB instead of 183–235 MB on a 600 MB 1080p stream), as fast as before.
  • Internal: the update code is split into smaller files.

Checked on Windows 11 and on Ubuntu 26.04 (WSL): downloads identical to the byte, video streams merged and complete, the one-command installation and its removal, and the local bridge refusing the programs of another account.

RDM 0.3.8

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 18:35

Security and robustness, after a full review of the code.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.8-x64-setup.msi, or let RDM install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.8 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.8-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.8-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Edge / Brave / Opera / Vivaldi… from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip
Firefox / Waterfox / LibreWolf / Floorp / Zen… from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.6)

Security

  • The local bridge (127.0.0.1:9614) closes at once a connection coming from a program of another account of the computer. Such a program could pose as the extension and hand RDM downloads; now it gets nothing.
  • The VirusTotal API key is encrypted with your passwords (Windows' DPAPI) instead of being written in clear in settings.json. An existing key moves there by itself at the first start.
  • Anti-SSRF: IPv6 addresses that carry a local IPv4 address (NAT64, 6to4) are recognised as local, like multicast and reserved addresses.
  • Extension: cookies restricted to their site (SameSite=Strict) are no longer sent between two different sites under the same country domain (a.co.uk and b.co.uk).

Better

  • Less memory: each running download's task shrinks from 128 KB to under 3 KB, and installing the YouTube module no longer unpacks Deno (over 100 MB) in memory.
  • A merged video (picture + sound) is safely on disk before it replaces its parts: a power cut right after can no longer leave an empty file.
  • A damaged settings file is kept aside (settings.json.bad) instead of being replaced by the defaults for good.
  • Internal: the download manager's core is split into smaller files; duplicated code is gone.

RDM 0.3.7

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 17:44

Internal clean-up: no change in behavior.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.7-x64-setup.msi, or let RDM install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.7 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.7-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.7-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Edge / Brave / Opera / Vivaldi… from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip
Firefox / Waterfox / LibreWolf / Floorp / Zen… from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.5)

Changed

  • Code organisation: the download manager's core, the dialogs and the settings form are split into smaller files and functions. Nothing changes for you: same features, same settings.

RDM 0.3.6

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 16:35

Clearer settings, any Chromium- or Firefox-based browser, and RDM asks before touching a file that is already there.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.6-x64-setup.msi, or let RDM install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.6 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.6-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.6-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Edge / Brave / Opera / Vivaldi… from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip
Firefox / Waterfox / LibreWolf / Floorp / Zen… from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.5)

New

  • Settings in tabs: General, Downloads, Browser, Security, Advanced — from what everyone uses to the expert settings, each tab with its own "Restore this tab's defaults". Nothing changes in your saved settings.
  • "If the file already exists": Ask, the new default. RDM comes to the front and lets you keep both files or replace the old one — for browser downloads, and for pasted or copied links too (asked once the server gave the name, before anything is written). Settings saved with another choice keep it.
  • Any Chromium- or Firefox-based browser: the extension window lists every browser Windows registers as installed (Vivaldi, LibreWolf, Floorp, Zen, Thorium…), and Add a browser… picks a portable one by its program. On Linux, the connector is registered for any browser found by its profile folder.
  • Remove the extension from RDM's extension window: the extension uninstalls itself at its next check-in.
  • The tab RDM opened to install the extension closes by itself once the extension is installed.
  • Progress bar split by connection while a download runs: each piece at its place in the file.
  • The title bar follows RDM's colours on Windows 11.
  • The download confirmation says what "Don't ask again" does, and what downloading unconfirmed risks.

Thanks to @Flybrow for these improvements.

RDM 0.3.5

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 16:17

A faster, more adaptive download engine: slow connections are replaced, picky servers are handled, and downloads reach full speed sooner.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.5-x64-setup.msi, or let RDM install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.5 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.5-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.5-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Brave / Opera / Edge from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip
Firefox / Waterfox from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.4)

New

  • Slow connections replaced: a connection far slower than the others from its start (a bad route), or silent while the others receive, is closed and replaced at once, and its piece goes to the others. On a test server where one connection in five crawls, a 96 MB download went from 14 s to 3.3 s.
  • Full speed sooner: connections double every half second while that pays off (every second before). On servers that cap each connection, a 96 MB download went from 2.2 s to 1.5 s.
  • Servers that cut off programs posing as a browser (for example Hetzner's mirrors): RDM asks again as a common download tool. These downloads failed before; they now run at full speed.
  • Servers limiting connections or requests (429/503): RDM obeys Retry-After, never asks for more connections than the server accepted, and remembers both for the next downloads from that server. A server counting requests (OVH's mirrors) gets as few as possible: a 100 MB file that took 71 s now takes about 11 s the first time, then well under a second.
  • One round trip less per download: the first request already brings the first bytes of the file.
  • The pieces of a download are split by measured speed, so that they end together; the file is opened once for all connections (fewer system calls, and no antivirus scan at each piece on Windows).
  • YouTube module: at most two extractions at once.
  • A recording can no longer be made to create files without end.

RDM 0.3.4

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 14:25

YouTube videos that YouTube refused to hand over directly ("anti-bot token required") can now be downloaded from the ⬇ button.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.4-x64-setup.msi, or let RDM install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.4 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.4-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.4-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Brave / Opera / Edge from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip
Firefox / Waterfox from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.4)

New

  • YouTube module (anti-bot token): when YouTube refuses the direct links, the ⬇ menu offers to install RDM's YouTube module once (about 300 MB, in the user's folder, no administrator rights): yt-dlp, Deno and bgutil, which generates YouTube's anti-bot token locally. Each file is checked against its published SHA-256. The qualities then appear in the menu as usual, verified to the last byte, and RDM downloads them at full speed.
  • When no method works, the menu now says why (the last refusals), instead of a bare message.

DRM-protected videos (paid films) remain unsupported. A network YouTube blocks outright (some VPNs) may still be refused.

RDM 0.3.3

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 13:24

RDM now speaks 16 languages, with automatic detection of the system language and a drop-down list in the settings.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.3-x64-setup.msi, or let RDM install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.3 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.3-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.3-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Brave / Opera / Edge from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip
Firefox / Waterfox from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.3)

New

  • 16 languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, Korean. RDM follows the system language; Settings → Language has a drop-down list.
  • The browser extension is translated too (it follows the browser's language).
  • Chinese, Japanese and Korean text is drawn with an embedded font (the program is about 19 MB bigger); Latin, Cyrillic and Vietnamese letters are now covered by the main font.

Not yet supported: right-to-left and complex scripts (Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Thai), which the UI toolkit cannot display correctly. Translations are machine-written and not yet reviewed by native speakers: corrections are welcome in crates/app/locales/.

RDM 0.3.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 12:53

Firefox and Waterfox hand downloads to RDM before they start, the extension keeps itself up to date there, and RDM asks before starting what the browser sends.

Install

System File
Windows 10 / 11 RDM-0.3.2-x64-setup.msi — or let RDM 0.3.1 install it by itself (the "Version 0.3.2 available" card)
Debian / Ubuntu rdm_0.3.2-1_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./rdm_*.deb
Fedora / openSUSE rdm-0.3.2-1.x86_64.rpm: sudo dnf install ./rdm-*.rpm
Linux (others) rdm-linux-x64.tar.gz: extract, then sh install.sh
Chrome / Brave / Opera / Edge from RDM (the "Browser extension" card), or rdm-chromium.zip
Firefox / Waterfox from RDM, or rdm-firefox.xpi (extension 0.4.2)

New

  • Firefox, Waterfox, LibreWolf: RDM takes a download over as soon as the server answers, before the browser fetches it — no more half-downloaded copy left in the browser, small files included.
  • The Firefox extension updates itself from the latest RDM release (updates.json).
  • Confirm downloads from the browser: RDM comes to the front and asks "Download / Cancel"; when a file of that name already exists, "Keep both" or "Replace". "Don't ask again" turns it off; it can be turned back on in the settings.

Thanks to Flybrow for these changes.
