Import NoteTaker outlines

For many years, I used Notebook from Circus Ponies to store data, ideas, and writing. When it went bust, I was lucky enough to discover NoteTaker which originated from the same progenitor and allowed easy importing of Notebook documents. However, both applications are proprietary, which means I'm screwed if the maintainers of the current version walk away from it to pursue other, more lucrative, activities. I find that Zavala has a near one-to-one correspondence in features to both of these programs. Since it is open source, there will always be a community willing to keep it going. I would like to learn of a way to import my NoteTaker outlines into Zavala while maintaining as much formatting and embedded information as possible. Ideally, it would be great if there were a simple tool which could take care of this job transparently. I am very impressed by Zavala, and would like to thank all those who create, extend and maintain it.

Continuing my previous suggestion, NoteTaker and Notebook both can import outlines to HTML, a more-or-less universal open format which includes most formatting and embedded content. It might be easiest to use this as an intermediate when importing by requiring the user to first export to HTML.

Does NoteTaker export outlines as OPML files? That is probably going to be as close as you are going to get to doing what you want to do. Unfortunately things like images and formatting aren't in the OPML spec, so those will get lost in the export/import process.

As for using HTML as an intermediary, I'm sure NoteTaker uses its own HTML formatting and parsing rules. To consume NoteTaker HTML and import it would take quite a bit of programming work. It just isn't worth it for me to spend time working on a NoteTaker specific import when there are features I need to implement that benefit more users.
