Patchlook v0.1.8

Choose a tag to compare

@worldtheater worldtheater released this 07 Nov 15:31

What's new

  • Highlight word-level differences in longer lines, up to 3,000 UTF-8 bytes, in both repository diffs and standalone text comparisons.
  • Reveal folded context in either direction, up to 20 lines per click. Remaining lines stay folded; the toolbar still supports expanding all context at once.

Downloads

  • macOS 15+ / Apple Silicon: DMG or ZIP, signed and notarized.
  • Windows 10+ / x64: extract the ZIP and run patchlook.exe.
  • Linux / x86_64: extract the tar.gz and run ./patchlook; built on Ubuntu 24.04.

Patchlook v0.1.7

Choose a tag to compare

@worldtheater worldtheater released this 05 Nov 16:46

What's new

  • Text and file comparison: open a separate comparison window from the File menu (≡ on Windows/Linux), the welcome screen, or ⌘N / Ctrl+N. Paste text, open UTF-8 files, or drop two files to compare them without a repository. Edit temporary copies, swap sides, and reload source files; originals are never overwritten.
  • Submodule browsing: expand a repository in Repos and open its submodules, including nested submodules and repositories accessed over SSH. Uninitialized submodules are shown with their status.
  • Consistent controls: text comparison shares the app's language and theme controls, with aligned file headers, split/inline views, syntax highlighting, optional wrapping, and context folding. New comparison windows start with wrapping off; opaque dark-mode gutters prevent text from showing through when scrolling horizontally.
  • Website and installation: multilingual homepage, downloadable SHA-256 checksums, and Homebrew installation instructions.

Patchlook v0.1.6

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Nov 12:39

Patchlook v0.1.6 adds read-only browsing of Git repositories on Linux servers over SSH.

What's new

  • Browse remote working-tree changes, staged and untracked files, branches, commit history, search results, and image previews without cloning the repository locally or installing Patchlook on the server.
  • Connect with a password, a private key (including passphrase-protected keys), or your existing SSH agent. Confirm the server's SHA-256 fingerprint on first connection; later connections verify the saved host key.
  • Keep SSH sessions connected while switching repositories. Recent now separates local and remote repositories, shows connection status, and offers Disconnect and Reconnect actions.
  • Reuse saved host, port, username, repository path, and key/config-file entries from input history, with individual deletion. Password and passphrase fields can be revealed while typing; secrets are never saved to disk.
  • Add a gradual fade-in for dialog backdrops.
  • Simplify branch browsing: click a row to choose a branch; the redundant arrow button is removed.
  • Fix outdated repository loads overriding a newer selection, and fix Windows SSH connections failing with set: Illegal option.

Connecting over SSH

Choose Connect via SSH… from the repository menu or the + menu above Recent. Enter the server details and the repository's absolute Linux path. Ordinary connections do not require an SSH configuration file.

The client needs OpenSSH (ssh on PATH). The server needs Git, a POSIX shell, and standard Linux command-line tools. Remote repositories remain read-only; use Refresh after changes made on the server. Passwords and key passphrases stay in memory for the connection. After restarting Patchlook, open a remote entry to reconnect.

Downloads

  • macOS (Apple Silicon, macOS 15 or later): use the DMG or ZIP. The app is signed with Developer ID, notarized by Apple, and includes a stapled notarization ticket.
  • Windows (x64): extract the ZIP and run patchlook.exe.
  • Linux (x86_64): extract the archive and run patchlook. Built on Ubuntu 24.04; compatible system libraries are required.

Git must be installed and available on PATH for local repositories.

Patchlook v0.1.5

Choose a tag to compare

@worldtheater worldtheater released this 30 Oct 17:30

Patchlook is a native Git viewer for browsing local repositories, reviewing changes, and exploring commit history. It remains read-only by default, with an optional read/write mode for staging changes.

What's new

  • Stage and unstage files, folders, or contiguous change blocks from the Changes view. These actions update the real Git staging area; commits are still made from the command line.
  • Discard an unstaged change block after confirmation, with Undo and Redo for staging and discard operations within the current repository and window.
  • Reduce Git work after staging by refreshing affected files, reusing parsed diff counts, and avoiding unnecessary undo snapshot queries. This improves responsiveness in repositories with many changed or binary files, especially on Windows, while preserving stale-content and undo checks.
  • Keep each file in a single row, show progress for partially staged files, and separate tracked changes from untracked files. Staged blocks remain visible with softer diff backgrounds, and staging preserves the reading position.
  • Use a compact lock button and status indicator to switch between read-only and read/write modes. Improve file-row alignment, tooltips, and action hover feedback.
  • Preserve intent-to-add entries when undoing staging, preventing an unintended empty file from entering a later commit.
  • Add a Chinese README and updated application screenshots.

Usage notes

Each new window starts read-only. Click the closed lock to enable writing. Undo history is cleared when switching repositories or closing the window; recovery stops if HEAD or the affected contents have changed externally. Use Refresh after editing files in another tool.

Review staged content with git diff --cached, then commit it with git commit.

  • Linux (x86_64): extract the archive and run patchlook. Built on Ubuntu 24.04; compatible system libraries are required.

Patchlook is a native, read-only Git viewer for browsing local repositories, reviewing file changes, and exploring commit history.

What's new
