Review compatibility metadata and long-term WordPress readiness #181

Hi WP Engine team & @bgardner,

While reviewing Frost, I noticed a few areas that may be worth revisiting to help ensure ongoing compatibility with future WordPress releases and modern hosting environments.

Concerns

  1. Compatibility metadata

    • It would be helpful to periodically review and update compatibility information after validation against newer WordPress releases.
    • Keeping this current gives users more confidence around support status and compatibility expectations.
  2. PHP requirement

    • The currently declared minimum PHP version appears conservative relative to the broader direction of WordPress and modern hosting environments.
    • It may be worth reviewing whether the minimum requirement still reflects the versions actively supported and tested by the project.
  3. Block theme / theme.json validation

    • Since Frost is a block theme, ongoing editor and theme.json changes can affect behavior across releases.

    • It may be useful to periodically validate:

      • Site Editor functionality
      • patterns/templates
      • style variations
      • navigation blocks
      • theme.json behavior
  4. Maintenance visibility

    • It would be helpful to provide clarity around expected maintenance cadence or compatibility update plans so users can better understand long-term expectations.

This is intended as a general compatibility and maintenance review request. Frost remains a valuable block-theme foundation, and I wanted to raise these points to help improve visibility around future support expectations.

Thanks.
