Question: supported way to use USB cameras on SystemCore?

Hi, we are testing a Logitech C920 USB camera on SystemCore and want to confirm the intended way to stream video.

The camera is detected by Linux and works with v4l2-ctl over SSH. /dev/video0 shows as HD Pro Webcam C920, and a short MJPEG capture at 640x480 30fps succeeds.

However, when we try to start the camera from Java robot code using WPILib CameraServer.startAutomaticCapture(), the robot code appears to become unstable when enabled. The Driver Station/dashboard shows code status blinking red/yellow.

Is Java CameraServer expected to work on SystemCore right now, or should USB cameras be streamed/configured through a SystemCore-level service instead?

It's certainly not a known issue that startAutomaticCapture() would cause robot code to crash, if you go to the Services section of the Diagnostics tab and locate the robot service the service log should have a stack trace for the crash that would be helpful.

Moving forward we are working on splitting the current WPILib Camera Server and apriltag functionalities out into optional "vendor libraries" (even though they are from WPILib) in favor of the integrated Limelight pieces that are present starting in the Beta 12 pre-releases. The robot code side of what these LL pieces might look like is coming soon, but the web dashboard configuration side should be present in Beta 12 images.

See release 12 @yoavnycfirst - plug in your camera and go to the cameras tab to configure vision pipelines or robot.local/camerastreams to view a full-screen videostream.
