What YakType Is

YakType is a voice input product built around a host app and an iOS custom keyboard extension. You configure speech engines, model endpoints, and related settings in the app, then use YakType in supported input fields through the keyboard extension.

Before You Start

To use YakType on iPhone or iPad:

  1. Install and open the YakType app.
  2. Complete your engine or model configuration inside the app.
  3. Add the YakType keyboard in iOS Settings.
  4. If you want to use network-based features, enable Full Access for the YakType keyboard.

Common Questions

Why does the keyboard need Full Access?

Some YakType features depend on network access and shared configuration between the host app and the keyboard extension. If you use third-party speech recognition services or large language models, Full Access is required for those features to work.

Does YakType provide its own built-in AI service?

No. YakType does not provide a unified developer-hosted AI service. Speech and large model capabilities are based on the providers and endpoints that you configure.

Does YakType collect my voice or text on the developer's server?

YakType is designed so that the developer does not collect, store, or process your voice recordings, transcripts, or rewritten text on a developer-owned backend. If you choose to use a third-party provider, the data needed for that feature is sent to the provider you selected.

Why is voice input or polishing not working?

Check the following:

  • microphone permission is granted
  • speech recognition permission is granted if you use the Apple speech engine
  • the YakType keyboard is enabled in iOS Settings
  • Full Access is enabled if your selected feature requires network communication
  • your configured API endpoint and credentials are correct
  • the selected third-party provider is available

Can I use YakType without cloud services?

That depends on the engine you choose and the current product configuration. Some features may work with Apple-provided on-device capabilities, while network-based recognition or text processing requires a third-party service configured by you.

Troubleshooting

If YakType does not work as expected:

  1. Force close the host app and reopen it.
  2. Recheck your configured engine, endpoint, and credentials.
  3. Remove and re-add the YakType keyboard in iOS Settings.
  4. Confirm that network access is available if you use cloud-based services.
  5. Update to the latest available app version.

When contacting support, include:

  • your device model
  • iOS version
  • YakType app version
  • which engine or provider you configured
  • a short description of the issue
  • screenshots or screen recordings if available

Do not send sensitive API keys in support messages.
