FAQ

Is CORE MDM production-ready? It's beta — functional and tested, but expect breaking changes. Don't deploy it as your only management layer on critical fleets yet.

Do I need Device Owner? Not to start. In Device Admin mode you get Lock, Wipe, Alarm, rename, online status, the command queue, and the app inventory. Device Owner unlocks app hiding, Block Social Media, enforced PIN length, reboot, kiosk, Private DNS, and most restrictions. See Device Owner Setup.

Can I set Device Owner on my normal phone without wiping it? Only if it has zero accounts, which a daily-driver phone never does. In practice that means a factory reset (then add accounts back after). To just see the features, use an Testing with an Emulator.

Does it work when the phone is offline? Policies and commands queue in Firestore and apply when the device reconnects. You can cancel a queued command while the device is still offline.

Will updates install over my current build? Yes, for v0.3.1 and later (one permanent signing key). From a pre-v0.3.1 build you must uninstall once. See Releases and Signing.

Why doesn't Google Sign-In work on my own build? Google Sign-In is tied to the signing certificate registered in Firebase. Only the official signed releases (or a build whose SHA you add to Firebase) can use it. Email/password always works.

How many apps does the inventory show? Are icons included? Up to 400 apps (package, label, version) — no icons, to stay under Firestore's 1 MB document limit.

Can I change which apps "Block Social Media" covers? Yes — edit SOCIAL_PACKAGES in MdmCommandService and ship a new release.

Is there a server I have to run? No. The command path is Firestore's real-time listeners. The backend/ (Node) and admin-backend/ (Spring Boot) services are optional extras (e.g. WebRTC screen control).

How do I add another admin? Devices are scoped by ownerId. Another Firebase user sees only devices enrolled under their account. The single super-admin (set in firestore.rules) can see all devices and the audit log.

Where's the data stored? In your Firebase project's Firestore (techeaz-core-mdm). See Firestore Data Model.

Can it remotely wipe or lock a lost phone? Yes — Wipe (factory reset) and Lock from the console, delivered as soon as the device is online. Wipe does not include external storage by default.

What Android versions are supported? Android 8.0+ (API 26+). The app targets a modern SDK but runs policies down to API 26.
