Welcome to the [Virtual Handheld] wiki!
Virtual Handheld (or VH) is a SteamVR overlay app that helps you play non-VR games in VR!
VH is available on itch.io and Steam!
For new VH users, see the First Startup Guide!
The core functionality of VH can be broken up into parts:
VH can convert VR controller input into input that non-VR games can understand:
- keyboard
- mouse
- gamepad (Xbox 360 or PS4; ViGEm Bus Driver required!)
VH input bindings or "virtual inputs" can be used together to play virtually any game. However, some games (such as those with anti-cheat, require administrator privileges, or use incompatible input types) may not be compatible.
VH can also block VR controller input from reaching other VR apps. This prevents your avatar from moving, jumping, grabbing or interacting while you have the handheld toggled on.
Note
On first startup, check the Welcome screen in the VH settings to make sure all the input issues are cleared!
To edit VH input:
- For bindings, click the "Bindings" tab in the VH settings and follow the on-screen instructions!
- For more advanced input settings, see
VH Settings > General > Input/Output
Virtual Handheld supports a Physical Input mode that allows you to use a real gamepad instead of a virtual one to play non-VR games.
To see which physical gamepads are compatible and how to use them, please see this page.
VH creates overlays that are rendered and composited on top of other VR apps. These overlays are local to your machine, so other users can't see them!
Games running on your desktop can be captured can displayed to the handheld overlays. By default it captures your main display, but you can capture a different display or a specific window. Screens settings can be configured in VH Settings > Screens!
You can capture up to two displays or windows at once by enabling the Top Screen. (If you need to capture more than two things at once, there are plenty of other VR desktop overlay apps available!)
Side-by-Side 3D content can be be displayed on the handheld screens. Note that VH itself does not inject stereoscopic 3D compatibility into games, so your game has to support it and have it enabled to use this feature!
OpenSoundControl (or OSC) is an open communication standard that is supported by some apps (especially social VR apps) that allow different programs to communicate with each other!
VH's OSC features include avatar parameters which allow you to animate a compatible prop on your avatar, and chatbox messages which tell other users that you are playing a game on VH!
For more detailed documentation on VH's OSC capabilities, see the OSC Reference Guide!
