Here are some commonly asked questions regarding Virtual Handheld:

What is Virtual Handheld?

Virtual Handheld (or VH) is a SteamVR overlay app that helps you play non-VR games in VR!

VH can convert VR controller input into input that non-VR games can understand, including keyboard, mouse, and gamepad simulation. It also creates a virtual screen that duplicates your desktop and overlays it on top of other VR apps, allowing you to play virtually any game, virtually anywhere in VR!

Can I play X game with this?

Virtually any game that you can run on your PC should technically work. However, some games (such as those with anti-cheat, require administrator privileges, or use incompatible input types) may not be compatible. Note that some games may not be playable for performance reasons.

What games are recommended?

Generally, games with low performance cost such as retro, 2D and low-poly games work best! Games with intense graphics and competitive online games are not recommended.

Important

Do not use VH with games that have anti-cheat, as the virtual inputs may be misinterpreted as being from cheat software.

Note

Games that use anti-tamper DRM (such as Denuvo) are known to run poorly.

Does this work with emulators?

Yes, as long as your emulator's controller inputs are properly configured to match the bindings you have set in the Virtual Handheld Settings.

Note

You may need to change your emulator's settings for performance. Some emulators or games may not be optimized enough to run well with VR.

Can others see what I am playing?

Short answer: no. Your overlays are local to your machine. Other users can't see them.

How do I share my screen to others in VR?

It's complicated. This isn't really a feature of VH, but there are ways to do it.

It requires an external livestream program (such as OBS) and a server to stream to (e.g. an unlisted YouTube stream if you want free, or VRCDN if you want low-latency). The world also need to have a video player that supports streaming.

Important

You must follow the Terms of Service (ToS) and guidelines of both the VR application and whatever livestreaming service you use! The developer of Virtual Handheld is not responsible for damages caused by the use or misuse of third party software or services.

Do I need to put VH on my avatar?

No, but there is an avatar prop that you can add that is controlled via OSC and supports video player duplication (if the world supports it)!

What is the ViGEm Bus Driver?

The ViGEm Bus Driver is required for emulating virtual gamepads in Windows. Without it, VH can simulate only keyboard and mouse input.

It is highly recommended to run this installer first before you run VH. Please see the First Startup Guide for detailed instructions on how to set up Virtual Handheld for the first time.

How do I fix this issue?

Please see the Troubleshooting page for diagnosing common issues when using VH.
