File exists error

What happened?

When starting Zed, the jdtls no longer starts and gives this error:

2025-10-08T10:01:51+02:00 ERROR [project::lsp_store] Failed to start language server "jdtls": from extension "Java" version 6.5.0: File exists (os error 20)

I have verbose setting on the server logs. Is there a way to get more output as to what is going on? This used to work fine a couple of weeks ago. Using version 6.5.0

What did you expect to happen?

JDTLS starting normally.

Thanks for the report. Could you try going to zed: extensions, search for Java, click on the three dots -> Install another version and then check whether this works with one of the prior releases? Curios as to how recently that broke.

I went back as far as 6.2.0 and it still gives the same error. Which makes me think that it's an issue in Zed rather, as I'm sure i had this working fine in July.

If you have the time, could you perhaps install this extension as a dev extension (zed: install dev extension) and see whether that prints a more detailed error into your log? I am afraid it won't, but if its fine with you, I'd still like you to try it out

Sure, but i'll need some guidance. Where can i find the extension binaries or packages to download?

You just need to clone this repo and select it in the dialog for installing dev extensions. You'll need to have Rust installed for that. See https://zed.dev/docs/extensions/developing-extensions#developing-an-extension-locally for what would be needed for this to work.

Weirdly enough, after using the dev extension it works. And when I then revert back to the latest release version, it again works. I am clueless :-/

Ah sorry, that one is on me :/ Forgot that installing a dev extension clears the cached extension data.

Obviously seems that the downloaded extension files were in an invalid state, which is probably hard to reproduce. There were quite some updates the last weeks, so might very well be that something broke there, which is sadly hard to get to the bottom to with anyhow, but well, that's a different issue.

I sincerely appreciate the efforts you put into debugging this error, and sorry that it turned out to be not for too much, but at least the extension works again for you I suppose. I am gonna close this out for the moment, given that seemingly no one else so far ran into this and due to my mistake, will be hard to reproduce, sorry for that. Luckily though, we now have an external contributor refactoring quite a lot here, which I am very grateful for and who will likely improve the extension with me going forward.
