ex52 how to fix "*" that can't catch all? #16

Love love the book and I have no other teacher but this book to teach me python.
I reached ex52 with a lot of efforts and frankly speaking, I've been struggling since ex50.
It seems the pace suddenly quickens in the book when it comes to the web things.
And I got stuck in ex52 for a long time now, especially on the '*' thing, that doesn't catch all other cases. (for the 5 escape pods I can always list them all, but for the 3-digit password, how to catch all wrong guesses?)
searched and searched the web and found no answer,
"try: except:" and failed; pls help pls
