Unsigned XPI installation is blocked by default in Zen Browser because the xpinstall.signatures.required preference is set to true in the default profile config. The browser inherits its extension installation and signature enforcement logic directly from Mozilla Gecko/Firefox, and there’s no extra logic or workaround in the Zen codebase for these preferences. If changing xpinstall.signatures.required or xpinstall.whitelist.required in about:config doesn’t have any effect, it’s likely due to upstream Gecko/Firefox limitations, not something specific to Zen Browser itself. This is a known issue discussed in the context of installing Chrome extensions with the CRX Installer add-on, which also requires disabling signature checks, but users have reported it doesn’t work as expected in Zen Browser either reference. If you need unsigned XPI support, you may want to check if there are any upstream Gecko/Firefox workarounds, but there’s currently no Zen-specific override or documented solution for this.
