PyCon UK website

This is the website for PyCon UK. It is hosted via GitHub Pages and available via http://pyconuk.org/.

We welcome pull requests for improvements! (Please see CONTRIBUTING.rst for details.)

Use the following process to submit changes:

• Fork the repository.
• Create a descriptive branch name for the change you are proposing.
• Push your changes in your local branch back to your remote GitHub repository.
• In GitHub, create a pull request from your branch against our upstream repository.
• Someone (not you) will check the change and either merge it (thus automatically updating the website) or add comments for further changes or a reason for rejection.

Usage

Installation

This site uses Jekyll. The official docs are good, but here's a quickstart:

• Ensure you have rvm or rbenv
• Ensure you have bundler - if you can't bundle on the command line, gem install bundler
• bundle install in the git repo to fetch the dependencies
• bundle exec jekyll serve -w will run a development server listening on port 4000
• bundle exec jekyll build will build the site in $gitroot/_site/

You can also set up a development environment with Docker:

0. (OS X only) Install boot2docker (you can also homebrew it)
1. Install docker
2. Build the docker image (this may take some time): make build
3. Run the docker image: make run
4. Get your [docker] ip. On OS X do: boot2docker ip, on Linux this is your external IP
5. Open your web browser of choice and go to the IP from step 4 at port 80.

Development

Pages are essentially Liquid templates. Essentially stick some YAML front-matter at the start containing page metadata (like layout and title) at the top of a Markdown / HTML file of content.

Travis will test branches, and branches won't get merged without review and passing tests, so dive right in!

To change the CSS use the files found in _sass and Jekyll will just pick things up and re-compile the new CSS. The original (less based) CSS files by Hawkz can be found in the /static/css directory.
