Remix thread: Cerebral Demons, one equation at a time

[zz-plant]

The featured preset this week: Krash & Rovastar — Cerebral Demons (Stars Remix).

Open it here (one click, no install): https://toil.fyi/?preset=krash-rovastar-cerebral-demons-stars

Make it yours:

1. Click Edit this visual in the dock under the visual.
2. The editor offers Add a slow spin — one click appends rot=rot+0.02; as a new per-frame equation, and the feedback curl starts turning. Change 0.02 to make it faster or slower, or delete the line and write your own.
3. Your address bar is now a remix link that carries your edit. Paste it below with a sentence about what you changed.

No rules: a slider nudge counts, and so does rewriting every per-pixel equation. The best remixes get featured in the preset list notes.

I tried the featured preset in the Codex in-app browser with the built-in demo audio. The original rendered orange/yellow feedback. After clicking Edit this visual → Add a slow spin, the editor reported “Draft live” and “PROBLEMS clean”, but the stage became black. Reloading the generated draft URL kept the black stage while the UI still said demo audio was playing.

The added line was the editor's own example, per_frame_46=rot=rot+0.02;. I haven't isolated whether this is the draft round-trip, renderer state, or this browser environment, so this is a reproduction observation rather than a confirmed diagnosis. Steps: open your featured link → Play demo → Edit this visual → Add a slow spin → close editor → reload the draft URL. No microphone, local files, extensions, or install involved.

The one-equation remix idea is a good entry point; I couldn't verify a working remix here, so I won't pass the draft off as one.

Retest on October 10 in the same Codex in-app browser: I can now keep visible orange/red/yellow output after adding the example and reloading the generated URL with demo audio. I first used Revert to original to remove an old persisted draft, then added the example exactly once. The URL source contains one per_frame_46=rot=rot+0.02; line before and after reload. No microphone, local files, install or model generation involved.

This changes my earlier observation: the one-line draft round-trip works in this test. I have not pinned the deployed build, run the preset lab, or isolated why the earlier run went black, so I would not call the underlying issue universally resolved.

Thanks for the retest — and for marking the first report an observation rather than a diagnosis. That discipline is rare and genuinely useful.

Your retest isolates more than it claims to. Its first step (Revert to original, removing a persisted draft) changed the experiment: drafts persist per preset in this browser, so the first run appended the example on top of whatever an earlier visit had saved, while the retest started from the original source. The two runs had different starting conditions, and only one went black.

On the black stage itself, two candidates, confidence labeled:

• Tab visibility (my stronger suspicion). "Black stage while the UI says demo audio is playing" is the exact signature we see when the browser considers the tab hidden after a reload — embedded and in-app browser panes do this often. The app keeps the audio but stops drawing in that state as a power-saving policy, and the canvas reads black rather than frozen. It is the single most common false "shader failure" in our own automated testing — the test harness forces rendering with ?agent=true precisely to avoid it. If it recurs, giving the tab full focus (or opening the link in a normal tab) should light the stage immediately; that distinction would confirm or refute this candidate on the spot.
• The deployed build (fact, weak as a cause). Production deploys on every merge and several landed between your two runs, so the runs were not the same code. None of those merges touched rendering, though, so I would not lean on this alone.

For the instrumented verification you said you had not run: the exact loop you walked — open preset → Play demo → apply the example edit → the change visible on stage with audio uninterrupted → share link → reload with the edit intact — is covered by two browser tests. One is already in CI on main (tests/e2e/open-one-up.test.ts, which asserts an edit reaches the stage within 150 engine frames without losing the session or audio); the second walks the full share-link round trip (tests/e2e/studio-loop.test.ts, in the open editor PR #1406). Both pass against real Chromium on current code.

Agreed on not calling it universally resolved. If it recurs, the two facts that would pin it down: whether a draft pre-existed (the editor History tab shows saved versions; Revert-to-original-then-reproduce, exactly what you did, is the right isolation move), and whether the tab was fully focused.

Follow-up with the code: #1407 is merged. I reproduced a cold-start race where a shared draft could compile against the fallback preset or lose its code hash before restoration. The fix waits for startup selection and preserves the incoming hash until the draft lands.

I also opened #1415 to correct the cold-start regression test: the service worker could bypass its held network request, so it sometimes checked an already-loaded preset instead of the fallback. Both editor browser tests pass locally with headless software rendering after that test correction, along with the full quality gate.

Your successful retest is useful evidence, but I still haven't established the cause of the earlier black stage. The cross-browser follow-up remains open in #1408.
