This beta simplifies file editing and protects existing files when an edit fails.

• Remove Eirene's apply_patch tool and use exact-text edit_file modifications
  with the existing edit UI. Keep write_file for creation and full rewrites.
• Prepare and flush edits in a temporary sibling file before replacing the
  original. Report disk space, quota, permission, read-only filesystem, and I/O
  errors with recovery guidance. Detect concurrent changes before replacement.
• Preserve line endings, file modes, ownership, and supported extended attributes.
  Reject ambiguous matches, invalid text, and hard-linked files safely.
• Keep editing instructions concise while supporting large changes and complete
  rewrites. Route native Codex file-change approvals through the edit naming.
• Fix the agents menu after selecting an agent.
• Refine the trust-screen watermark and organize README beta installation
  commands into a collapsible section with platform labels.

This stable release brings together the 0.1.16 beta improvements, with better
provider setup, terminal rendering, workspace trust, and installation.

• Add an optional animated companion, disabled by default. Use /companion in
  supported image terminals to toggle it; improve transparent rendering and
  reduce flickering in Windows Terminal.
• Separate stable and Edge updates. /update selects stable releases;
  /update edge includes prereleases. Improve Windows updating and add Edge
  options to the Bash and PowerShell installers.
• Improve ChatGPT sign-in browser launching and provider configuration status.
  Handle raw SSL failures through normal error paths and retry eligible TLS
  failures before a response or tool activity starts.
• Improve Windows emoji sizing, Markdown links, workspace trust presentation,
  and task display. Selecting input or transcript text copies it automatically
  and displays a brief character-count notification; masked API keys are excluded.
• Move default application data to ~/.local/share/eirene. Migrate the previous
  ~/.local/eirene directory when the new location does not exist; preserve
  explicit EIRENE_HOME settings and avoid merging existing directories.
• Refine installer progress, platform checks, and download handling.

The Raspberry Pi SSL: BAD_VALUE issue has not been reproduced on ARM64
hardware; this release improves recovery without claiming an underlying fix.

Install or upgrade through the standard installers, or run /update in Eirene.

This beta improves ChatGPT connection error handling following repeated
SSL: BAD_VALUE failures reported on ARM64 Raspberry Pi Linux.

• Raw Python SSL errors during inference, model discovery, and authorization
  now use the existing handled-error paths instead of an unexpected failure.
• SSL: BAD_VALUE is recognized by the bounded TLS retry logic. Requests can
  retry before answer text or tool activity starts; interrupted answers and
  tool work are not automatically replayed.
• Regression tests cover raw and HTTPX-wrapped SSL failures, retry limits,
  preservation of partial output, and credentials after failed token refresh.

The underlying Raspberry Pi SSL failure has not been reproduced on ARM64
hardware; this release improves handling and recovery rather than claiming
to resolve its underlying cause.

This beta fixes Windows emoji presentation and companion rendering.

• Manual-mode, auto-mode, and web-tool icons consistently request emoji
  presentation on Windows. Rich now requires version 14.3.3 or newer so emoji
  widths are measured correctly.
• The Sixel companion uses transparent pixels instead of painting a black
  rectangle around the character.
• Typing outside the companion's area leaves its pixels untouched. Pose
  changes keep the same widget mounted, and text updates and companion drawing
  share a synchronized update in Windows Terminal to reduce flickering.
• Companion rendering checks cover transparency, typing, blinking, resizing,
  and disabling the companion. Live Windows visual verification remains pending.

This beta adds an explicit edge update channel.

• /update and /update check select stable releases only.
• /update edge includes alpha, beta, and release candidate versions, selecting
  the highest published version newer than the installed version.
• /update edge check checks that channel without downloading or installing.
• Startup update checks remain stable. Both channels retain download URL checks,
  checksum verification, and executable smoke tests.
• Side questions retain Eirene's identity even with an empty conversation.
• Web search and fetch tool cards use a globe icon, and the manual mode icon
  requests emoji presentation on Windows.

This beta adds the optional graphical Eirene companion and returns prompt
editing to Textual's standard rendering and cursor behavior.

• /companion [on|off] silently toggles the companion and saves the preference.
  She starts disabled, including after upgrading from the earlier automatic
  default. The command is listed only in terminals supporting images.
• Thinking and work use the laptop pose; questions and approvals use the
  question pose. Idle blinking stays the same size, with her feet anchored to
  the input border. The picture overlays the interface without shifting it.
• Kitty uses a transparent native graphics placement. Clicking the character
  briefly makes her angry; repeated clicks make her furious. Reactions last
  one second and 1.3 seconds respectively.
• Compact PNG artwork preserves transparency and project attribution. Bundled
  companion frames total approximately 25 KB.
