Toad Computer 0.5.1 is rootless by design and hands a person their files.

  • Nothing on the computer runs as root and nothing can elevate, so apt could never install anything; it only invited the attempt. The image no longer carries the apt front ends, and the person's shell answers apt, apt-get and sudo with the order software comes in: what the computer prepares (toad-computer prepare --packages ..., with toad-computer packages to choose from), then Nix by hand (nix shell nixpkgs#<name>), then what the image already has. The guide and the README say the same.
  • An AppImage runs: the image sets APPIMAGE_EXTRACT_AND_RUN=1, so it extracts itself instead of asking for the FUSE a container cannot offer.
  • The viewer's control bar has Files, watching or driving: a panel with the home and what is under it as the machine lists it. A folder opens, the arrow goes up as far as the home, and a file is saved on the viewer's own computer by the page's browser. Behind it, GET /files?path= lists a folder and GET /files/download?path= streams a file as an attachment; both take the token as a query like /ws, and both stop at the home like the files tool.
  • The quick suite has a "rootless by design" case, and the image contract lists the home, saves a file, and is refused above the home and without the token.

Use ghcr.io/1broseidon/toad-computer:0.5.1. Existing computers retain their running version until recreated; state info and state guide identify the attached computer.

Validation: native ARM64/x86_64 release gates passed all 19 scenarios per architecture, the image contract, restart plus recreate recovery on the same home and store volumes, image-identity checks, and cold pulls.

Cold registry pulls: 16.60 s ARM64 / 20.36 s x86_64. Downloaded-image start-to-health: 0.280 s / 0.438 s. Compressed layers: 406,360,950 / 405,925,709 bytes. The combined image digest is sha256:017c6b1c38cc7950af39f120699b5b4093a9a45dcc134d6c6fb05c96075c5566.

The desk pins a Computer release in Toad PR #13; a desk that pins 0.5.0 keeps working against 0.5.1, since the tools and the viewer's socket are unchanged.
