Preferences you can read. The switches were two grey squares that looked much the same on or off. They are now the familiar pill: filled with the accent colour with the knob on the right when on, grey with the knob on the left when off. The two sliders show their current value above the track and the scale below it (0.5 s to 2.0 s for the bookmark hold time, more transparent to more opaque for the background). The dialog and its cards stay solid even when the window background is translucent, so the text keeps its contrast. Thanks @conree for the change (#44).

All 26 automated suites pass in a fresh Release build and under AddressSanitizer, UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer and LeakSanitizer. The window tests (161 keyboard and 23 mouse checks on a live desktop) and the drag-and-drop and file-chooser checks all pass, and the packaged binary passes the headless launch/D-Bus checks.

Download the Arch Linux x86_64 package below, then install or update it:

sudo pacman -U ~/Downloads/omanta-0.1.31-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

@28allday 28allday released this 21 Oct 06:11

Crash fix for the drag preview. Pressing a file used to capture a small preview card on Qt's drawing thread, in case the press turned into a drag. If the file's row went away while that capture was still running (for example when the press became a double-click that opened a folder), the drawing thread could be left working on freed memory. That is the likely cause of the crash in #42. The preview is now painted directly, only once a drag actually starts, and Omanta no longer does any work on that thread. It looks the same as before. Thanks @conree for the report.

Quieter file dialogs at login and logout. When Omanta is your file chooser, the system can start it while the desktop is still coming up or already shutting down, with no screen to draw on. It used to crash there, leaving a crash report and notification. It now just declines.

The sort order is remembered. Choosing a sort in the view options (A-Z, Z-A, Last Modified, First Modified, Size, Type) or by clicking a list column header now sticks: new tabs, new windows and the next launch start with it instead of going back to A-Z.

LocalSend action. "Send with LocalSend" now simply opens LocalSend with the selected files ready to send. It used to pass --headless send flags that LocalSend doesn't have. Thanks @calmasacow for spotting it.

This build is linked against Qt 6.12, which is what Omarchy ships now. If Omanta won't start after updating, update your system first (omarchy-update).

@28allday 28allday released this 14 Oct 19:55

Reorder your bookmarks. Hold a bookmark in the sidebar until it fills with colour, then drag it into place. The other bookmarks slide aside as it passes. Escape or a click anywhere else finishes. Right-click a bookmark → Reorder Bookmarks does the same. The hold time can be set from half a second to two seconds in Preferences → Sidebar. The order is saved to the standard GTK bookmarks file, so Nautilus and other apps' file dialogs see it too. Thanks @calmasacow.

Settings for custom actions. Preferences → Custom Actions lists every installed action, including the ones Omanta ships (Transcode, LocalSend and the rest), with a switch to hide any of them from the right-click menu. An action's TOML file can now also declare one setting, which shows up there as a dropdown and reaches its command as an OMANTA_OPTION_… variable. examples/actions/resolve-audio in the repository is a worked example: "Convert Audio for Resolve" rewrites a video's AAC audio so DaVinci Resolve on Linux can hear it, with the codec chosen in Preferences. It isn't installed by default. Thanks @calmasacow.

Copy Path. Right-click a file → Copy Path copies its full path as text, or one path per line for several files. Thanks @weedwhitesandwine.

@28allday 28allday released this 11 Oct 09:11

Omanta is now your Open and Save dialog. When an app asks the desktop for a file, it gets Omanta's own picker instead of the GTK one: the same sidebar, path bar and list, a preview of the selected file, and the app's file types in a Show menu at the bottom (files of other types stay visible but dimmed). Save puts the name box first with the name (not the extension) selected, takes typed paths like scans/holiday, and asks before replacing a file. Select Folder lists folders only. Ctrl+L, / or ~ type a path, Ctrl+F searches, Ctrl+H shows hidden files, Escape cancels.

It works for every app that asks the desktop portal for its dialogs: Chromium-based browsers, GTK 4 apps and Flatpaks among them. An app that draws its own GTK dialog keeps showing that one.

omanta-switch omanta turns it on and omanta-switch nautilus hands the dialogs back. If you switched to Omanta before this release, run omanta-switch omanta once more — it restarts the desktop portal, so do it when you are not screen sharing.

Also: in a narrow list view the Name column now keeps its room, and columns that do not fit drop off the right instead of squeezing the names out.

All 25 automated suites pass in a fresh Release build and under AddressSanitizer, UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer and LeakSanitizer. The picker passes 23 end-to-end checks driving real dialogs through the portal, and the packaged binary passes the headless launch/D-Bus checks.

sudo pacman -U ~/Downloads/omanta-0.1.27-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

@28allday 28allday released this 06 Oct 19:00

Drag-and-drop now says what it will do. While you drag, a small label above the pointer reads "Move to “folder”" or "Copy to “folder”" for the folder under it, following the usual rule: a move within a filesystem, a copy across one, Ctrl forces a copy, Shift forces a move. It changes the moment you press or release the key. Over the sidebar it reads "Move to Trash", "Star" or "Bookmark". When letting go would do nothing, including dropping something back into the folder it came from, there is no label and nothing happens. (#4)

Drag a folder onto the sidebar to bookmark it. A "New Bookmark" row appears at the end of the Bookmarks section while a folder drag is over the sidebar; drop on it and the bookmark is written to the GTK bookmarks file, so Nautilus and the file chooser see it too. (#20)

Thanks to @arffe and @TinyWorkshopDesign for the requests.

All 24 automated suites pass in a fresh Release build and under AddressSanitizer, UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer and LeakSanitizer. The app passes all 161 keyboard and 23 mouse checks, including the new drag-and-drop ones, and the packaged binary passes the headless launch/D-Bus checks.

Right-click → Open in Terminal now opens the terminal in the folder you clicked. With Ghostty running as a single instance (the Omarchy setup) it used to open in the home folder or the focused window's folder. Other terminals are now told the folder explicitly through xdg-terminal-exec --dir. (#36)

Thanks to @calmasacow for the contribution.

All 24 automated suites pass in a fresh Release build and under AddressSanitizer, UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer and LeakSanitizer. The app passes all 161 keyboard and 12 mouse checks, and the packaged binary passes the headless launch/D-Bus checks.

Right-click selected files and choose Move to… or Copy to… to pick a destination folder. Both use the existing name-clash dialog, including Keep Both. (#33, #31)

Thanks to @weedwhitesandwine for the contribution. This release also fixes an intermittent tab-close test failure.

All 24 automated suites pass in a fresh Release build and under AddressSanitizer, UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer and LeakSanitizer. The packaged app passes the headless launch/D-Bus checks, all 161 keyboard and 12 mouse checks, and live Move to… / Copy to… checks.

@28allday 28allday released this 02 Oct 14:30

New:

  • Open With in the right-click menu. Right-click a file and choose Open With to open it in any app registered for its type, or pick Other Application… to choose one and set the default. It sits third, right after Open. (#22, #21)
  • New Folder button. A + button beside search in the header creates a new folder in one click, alongside Ctrl+Shift+N and the right-click menu. It is greyed out where a folder can't be made (Recent, Starred, Trash, Network). (#28)

Fixes:

  • Disabled menu items look disabled again. Entries that can't be used right now (Paste with nothing copied, Cut with nothing selected) were drawn at full brightness, so they looked clickable. They are greyed out again.

Thanks to @roidm for the Open With submenu, and to @mkruszyniak-omarchy and @OhFoe for asking for these.

All 24 automated suites pass normally and under AddressSanitizer, UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer and LeakSanitizer, and the desktop checks pass (161 keyboard, 12 mouse).

Download the Arch Linux x86_64 package below, then install or update it from wherever your browser saved it (usually ~/Downloads):

sudo pacman -U ~/Downloads/omanta-0.1.23-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

omanta v0.1.22

@28allday 28allday released this 02 Oct 07:30

Fixes:

  • "Show in folder" opens omanta. With omanta set as the default file manager and no file manager running, "Show in folder" from a browser (or anything else using org.freedesktop.FileManager1) still opened Nautilus. Switching to omanta now also covers this, and if Nautilus is open when you switch, omanta takes over as soon as its last window closes. Switching back to Nautilus restores the stock behaviour. (#27)

If you already switched to omanta on an earlier version, run omanta-switch omanta once after updating (or toggle it off and on in Preferences) to pick this up. If you ever remove omanta without switching back first, "Show in folder" falls back to Nautilus by itself.

Thanks to @WeaselBiggs for the fix.

All 23 automated suites pass normally and under AddressSanitizer, UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer and LeakSanitizer, and the desktop checks pass (161 keyboard, 12 mouse).

Download the Arch Linux x86_64 package below, then install or update it from wherever your browser saved it (usually ~/Downloads):
