hevcpress 0.1.0

First release.

hevcpress makes iPhone HEIC photos and Live Photo videos about 10% smaller without losing anything: unpacking gives back the original file bit for bit. On my test set that is 10.6%, against 3.4% for the best general-purpose compressor (zpaq) and about 3% for xz or 7-Zip. Details and benchmarks are in the README.

Download

hevcpress-0.1.0-macos-universal.tar.gz contains a single binary that runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, with no dependencies. Other platforms: build from source with cargo build --release.

The binary isn't signed, so macOS will block it the first time. After unpacking, run:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine hevcpress-0.1.0-macos-universal/hevcpress

Quick start

hevcpress pack IMG_1234.HEIC IMG_1234.MOV # writes .hvp files next to them
hevcpress view IMG_1234.HEIC.hvp # opens a temporary copy
hevcpress unpack IMG_1234.HEIC.hvp # restores the original

Every compressed file is checked against the original before it is written, and carries a checksum. Still, this is a first release: keep your originals.
