Image Layout joins A Box of Tools with grids, strips, presets and individual picture framing. This release also improves all 54 existing tools, including perspective image stacking, comparison views, file-transfer Cancel and Retry, exact YAML numbers, XML preservation, media timing, safer processing limits, keyboard controls and reliable cancellation.

The notes below include every change in the 68 merged pull requests (#482–#547, #550 and #551), covering all 77 development commits since the previous production source. Both confirmed defects and optional enhancements are included.

Across the tools, older file reads, exports, previews and clipboard replies now stay tied to the source and settings that started them. Replacing or clearing a source prevents late work from restoring obsolete results; unfinished native browser calls may still need to return before their resources are released.

Images

Image Compressor (compress-image)

  • Capture one immutable batch plan for format, target size, resizing permission and probed encoder capabilities; lock settings while preserving Cancel and completed downloads.
  • Completed results show the target/output/resizing policy actually used. Decode, encoding and measurement resources release on all exit paths. #497

Image Resizer (resize-image)

  • Capture each crop and source/destination rectangle with dimensions, format, quality and background before decoding; lock numeric and crop controls for the run.
  • Results and the viewer show actual encoded quality/settings. Original passthrough, per-image crops, partial successes after Cancel and later files after failure remain; owned bitmaps/canvases release on all exits. #500

Image Layout (image-layout) — new tool

  • Arrange local images as grids or horizontal/vertical strips, with ordering, columns, output width, cell shapes, gaps, padding, background and fit controls. Six presets cover square/portrait collages, contact sheets, original-proportion strips and seamless grids.
  • Reframe each image by dragging or keyboard position/zoom controls, from 25%–400%. Framing follows the image through reordering and survives presets; reset one frame or all frames. Preview and full-size export share geometry.
  • Save PNG, JPEG or WebP; PNG/WebP can preserve transparency while JPEG uses a solid background. Decode full-size sources one at a time, with format readback, conservative canvas limits, cancellation between images and retirement of outdated results. Includes worked example, guide, share card and icons. #484
  • Remove all returns keyboard focus to the picker and releases empty-preview canvas pixels. #543

HEIC to JPG (heic-to-jpg)

  • Freeze source batch, format, quality and metadata context before engine readiness; lock controls and show the completed policy.
  • Counts/savings use File identity: repeated names count separately and multiple pictures from one HEIC count that source once. Unique names, partial successes, primary-picture JPEG EXIF limits and shared AVIF behavior remain; failure cleanup releases resources. #504

WebP to JPG (webp-to-jpg)

  • A failed input no longer discards completed JPEGs or prevents later conversions. Filename/cause identify failures; ZIP contains exactly successful outputs.
  • Cooperative Cancel retains completed outputs. Results use captured quality/matte settings, and native encoding, alpha checks and support probes release resources on failure. Existing first-frame and JPEG flattening policies remain. #508

PNG to WebP (png-to-webp)

  • Retain completed conversions, continue after a failure and identify its input. Capture mode/quality and completed labels together.
  • Cooperative Cancel uses the shared converter. ZIP/name semantics and actual lossless/mismatch readback remain; failed inputs can be selected for another run without repeating successful inputs. #525

AVIF to JPG (avif-to-jpg)

  • Retain JPEG successes, continue after per-file failure and offer cooperative Cancel. Captured context reports actual quality/background used for transparency flattening.
  • Add a project-owned transparent AVIF example alongside both opaque fixtures. Browser decode, HDR and bit-depth limits remain disclosed. #527

ID Photo Maker (id-photo)

  • Focusing or keyboard-nudging a landmark reports source-pixel coordinates in visible translated live feedback; repeated arrows settle into one current reading.
  • Blur, dragging, resets, replacement, Clear and signature mode retire pending feedback. Existing arrow/Shift movement, geometry and export remain. #513

Image Stacker (stack-images)

  • Auto perspective alignment uses distributed measurements, held-out predictions and model bounds before applying projective correction. Ordinary bursts retain similarity correction when perspective offers no benefit. Bounded mesh rendering avoids another full-frame RGBA copy; details identify corrections, fallbacks and weak frames.
  • Open a draggable reference/stack comparison at matching crop/resolution. Mouse, touch and keyboard operate the divider in Fit to window. Actual-pixel view shows a separately selected image and supports mouse drag pan, arrows, wheel and native scrolling; returning to Fit restores comparison availability.
  • Plan live inspection/alignment/stacking/readback/encoding buffers, release discovery decodes promptly, refuse impossible plans and prevent focus-band seams. Unreadable imports stay visible, settings remain fixed during a run and Add can normalize with an exact numeric exposure.
  • Correct RAW documentation to explain embedded JPEG dimensions and separate inspection/decode reads. Update memory/decode estimates, clarify unsupported TIFF, eight-bit RGB blending and sigma-clipping limits, and revise six translations and the illustrated guide. #482
  • Completed output reports captured method, alignment, resolution, exposure, encoding and relevant quality/sigma/focus parameters. A pre-run note explains discarded transparency and opaque PNG output. #515

Image Redactor (redact-image)

  • Enter exact source-pixel Left/Top/Width/Height. Apply validates whole numbers, shows clamped geometry and adds one Undo step only for a change. Native fields/drafts retain focus through unrelated redraws; composition Enter does not apply.
  • Fit/2x/4x magnifies the capped preview with a named scrollable viewport and pan buttons. Full-size coordinates/output remain exact. Zoom, pan, Apply, Undo, Clear and replacement retire active gestures and outdated exports. #517

EXIF Viewer & Remover (exif-editor)

  • Mark preservation controls as next-run choices. Each download reports captured orientation/ICC requests; AVIF explains its decode-to-PNG policy.
  • Inspect cleaned copy reparses downloadable bytes to show actual EXIF, ICC and display headers. Requested preservation stays separate from actual presence; Clear/replacement retire inspections. Stripping and compressed-image bytes keep existing behavior. #520

DICOM Viewer (dicom-viewer)

  • Key parsed/decoded caches by File identity, reset them together and reject superseded reads/frame decodes. Same-name files cannot pair one header with another file's pixels. #486
  • Name the focusable viewport and link visible translated arrow/PageUp/PageDown guidance, qualified for stacks/multi-frame data; existing scrubber and navigation remain. #531

Image to ICO (image-to-ico)

  • Capture sizes, format families, storage, preset, fit and background for the batch; lock fit/background and label completed outputs with the actual request.
  • Decode export pixels independently from preview lifetime and release on every exit. Website-pack-only exports produce a useful summary/ZIP. ICO slots, ICNS readback, Apple opacity, Android inset, SVG privacy/downscale and naming remain; actual macOS icon-surface verification stays a limitation. #523

Image to Data URI (image-to-data-uri)

  • Preserve SVG bytes/declarations, including UTF-16, legacy encodings, invalid UTF-8 and UTF-8 BOMs. Valid UTF-8 can use readable percent-encoding; other cases use base64 with translated explanation.
  • Share the existing BOM/declaration-aware SVG reader; cover long declarations with full-text checks. Detection does not promise browser support for every original encoding. #532

SVG to Image (svg-to-image)

  • Inventory outside images/fonts/styles in an inert XML tree. Source rows, preview and completed results explain missing static assets and advise embedding them; never fetch them or alter rendering source/pixels.
  • Share the existing BOM/declaration reader without changing this tool's API or decode policy. #536, #532

Image to SVG (image-to-svg)

  • Both panes share a source-pixel keyboard cursor with translated position/region feedback. Arrow/Enter/Space use existing exclusion/background-sample semantics alongside pointer/zoom/pan.
  • Clear/replacement retire late pixels/errors and release bitmaps. Slider bursts coalesce for 120 ms, comm...
