Install

  1. Download TetherKitNext-1.1.1.dmg, open it, and drag TetherKitNext to Applications.
  2. Open TetherKitNext from Applications and click Enable Background Component; allow it once in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions.
  3. Plug in your Android phone, turn on USB tethering, and click Connect.

Optional: Settings › Command-line tool › Install Command links tetherkitnext-cli into /usr/local/bin.

Universal build (Apple Silicon + Intel), macOS 14 Sonoma or later (bundled CLI supports macOS 13.3+).
Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

Coming from TetherKit 0.2.0 (beta 1–3) or upstream TetherKit?

TetherKitNext installs alongside the old TetherKit app instead of replacing it. Remove the old app and its background helper first so both do not compete for your USB device: see the upgrade steps.

What's Changed

  • Reliable Background Component Restart (HelperInstaller.swift, AppModel.swift, OnboardingView.swift):
    • Fixed HelperInstaller.reregister() failing on the first click (Operation not permitted) because SMAppService.unregister() returns before launchd removes the job. reregister() now waits for the status to leave .enabled and retries register() with backoff (~14 s total).
    • AppModel.refresh() now preserves the current UI state during an active restart instead of briefly switching to the setup steps while the daemon restarts, and extends the launch wait timeout to 10 s.
    • Simplified the XPC protocol mismatch card to "Restart the background component to finish updating" without showing internal protocol revision numbers.
  • Mounted DMG Disk Icon Fix (scripts/make-dmg.sh):
    • Re-copies .VolumeIcon.icns and re-applies the kHasCustomIcon (0x0400) FinderInfo flag after Finder's AppleScript layout pass (which removed .VolumeIcon.icns), and verifies .VolumeIcon.icns is present in the converted UDZO image.
