v1.3.0 — DBML Studio for AI agents
Added
- AI agents can use DBML Studio's tools (MCP). Turn on
dbmlStudio.mcp.enabledin your user settings and DBML Studio offers its tools to AI agents in VS Code, such as Copilot in agent mode, as an MCP server. An agent can then import a database schema as DBML, compare a.dbmlfile with a database, check DBML it wrote, and convert between DBML and SQL — when you ask in plain words ("how does schema.dbml differ from staging?"). It uses the connections you saved in DBML Studio and reads only the structure of those databases, never their data, and it runs nothing against them. It reads and writes files only inside the open folder. Saving or removing a connection restarts the server with the new set. Off by default: an update never hands your databases to an agent without you turning it on, and a repository's settings cannot turn it on for you. The same server runs outside VS Code too, for Claude Code or Cursor, as the npm packagedbml-mcp.
Fixed
- Comparing with a database no longer flags every primary key. A column written
id integer [pk]withoutnot nullwas reported as nullable against the database, because Postgres makes every primary key columnNOT NULLand the comparison did not. A primary key column, inline or in a composite key, now compares as not nullable.
Changed
- Requires VS Code 1.101 or later (May 2025), the first release with the API the MCP server uses. Older VS Code keeps 1.2.2. The package grows from 5.6 MB to about 8.1 MB, most of it the SQL parsers the server carries.
Packages
dbml-studio-1.3.0.vsix: the extension, for installing without the Marketplace (code --install-extension dbml-studio-1.3.0.vsix).dbml-frame-1.3.0.tgz: the diagram frame and its protocol for other hosts, unchanged for hosts since 1.2.2.
The MCP server on its own, for Claude Code or Cursor, is released as dbml-mcp 0.1.0.
dbml-mcp 0.1.0 — DBML Studio's tools for AI agents
The first release of dbml-mcp, DBML Studio's tools for AI agents as an MCP server over stdio. It is one bundled file with no dependencies to install, and needs Node 20 or later.
- Tools:
list_connections,list_databases,list_schemas;import_schema: a Postgres schema's structure as DBML;compare_with_database: a DBML file against a live schema;validate_dbml: checked with the DBML compiler, with line and column;dbml_to_sql,sql_to_dbml.
- Connections come from
DBML_CONNECTION_<NAME>environment variables, so an agent sees names, never passwords. - Read-only towards databases. It reads structure only, never rows, and runs no DDL. Files are read and written only inside the working folder.
In VS Code, the DBML Studio extension 1.3.0 runs this same server for you; turn on dbmlStudio.mcp.enabled. For Claude Code and Cursor, see the README. npx -y dbml-mcp works once the package is published to npm. Until then, install the attached tarball: npx -y --package=./dbml-mcp-0.1.0.tgz dbml-mcp.
v1.2.2 — the hand that let go mid-drag
Fixed
- Dragging the diagram keeps its grabbing hand. The hand lasted only until the pointer crossed a relation's button: leaving the button set the cursor back to the arrow in the middle of the drag. It now stays the hand until you let go.
- The cursor comes back after the first drag. After the first drag of the diagram, or the first visit to a relation's button, the cursor stayed an arrow everywhere in the diagram, over text too. It now returns to the ordinary one.
Changed
- The extension is built with current tools and libraries — a new bundler, React 19 and version 10 of the DBML parser. Nothing you do in it works differently: the same schemas draw the same diagrams, and import from a database produces the same DBML. The package is larger for it, 5.6 MB in place of 3.6, most of it the newer parser.
DBML Studio for Obsidian 0.2.3
Changed
- The diagram frame inside
main.jsis built with current libraries, among
them version 10 of the DBML parser. Notes draw the same diagrams as in
0.2.2, butmain.jsis 3.9 MB in place of 2.5.
mkdocs-dbml 0.1.1 — the hand that let go mid-drag
Fixed
- Dragging a diagram kept its grabbing hand only until the pointer crossed
a relation's button: leaving the button set the cursor back to the arrow
mid-drag. It now stays the hand until the drag ends. - After the first drag of a diagram, or the first visit to a relation's
button, the cursor stayed an arrow everywhere in the diagram, over text
too. It now goes back to the ordinary one.
Changed
- The diagram frame is built with current libraries, among them version 10
of the DBML parser. Diagrams draw as before, but every page with one now
downloads about 2.8 MB of compressed script in place of 1.8, and the wheel
is 5.6 MB in place of 3.6.
antora-dbml 0.1.1 — values quoted as written
Fixed
- A playbook or block value given as a mapping where a single value belongs —
theme: {mode: dark}— is quoted as written in the error, as
{"mode":"dark"}, instead of as[object Object].
Changed
- The diagram frame is built with current libraries, among them version 10
of the DBML parser. Diagrams draw as before, but every page with one now
downloads about 2.8 MB of compressed script in place of 1.8, and the package
is 5.5 MB in place of 3.5.
DBML Studio for Obsidian 0.2.2
Nothing changes in the plugin: main.js, the frame it carries and the styles
behave as in 0.2.1. The release exists so the directory's review reads the
repository again. Its last report could not install the repository's
dependencies, and the root .yarnrc now lets that install finish on an older
Node.
DBML Studio for Obsidian 0.2.1
The directory's automated review flagged code in the repository; this release
carries the fixes, so the review reads them.
Fixed
- Dragging the diagram kept its grabbing hand only until the pointer crossed
a relation's button: leaving the button set the cursor back to the arrow
mid-drag. It now stays the hand until the drag ends. - After the first drag of the diagram, or the first visit to a relation's
button, the frame's cursor stayed an arrow everywhere, over text too. It
now goes back to the ordinary one.
DBML Studio for Obsidian 0.2.0
Made for Obsidian's Community plugins directory.
Added
- An English interface. Block errors, notices and the command name are in
English, and in Russian when Obsidian's own language is Russian. The
command is "Refresh diagrams" ("Обновить диаграммы" in Russian).
Changed
- Installed from Obsidian's Community plugins: Settings → Community plugins
→ Browse, "DBML Studio". The zip on the GitHub release still installs by
hand. - The diagram frame travels inside
main.js. On the first start, and after
each update, the plugin writes it intoframe/in its own folder; a start
with an up-to-date frame writes nothing. Nothing is downloaded. - Needs Obsidian 1.13.7 or later, the version it is checked on.
antora-dbml 0.1.0 — diagrams in Antora sites
The first release of antora-dbml: DBML Studio's interactive ER diagram in an Antora site.
npm i -D antora-dbmlantora:
extensions:
- require: antora-dbml
models: ./modelsdbml::shop[tables="shop.order,shop.order_item",height=600]Added
dbml::<model>[tables=…,height=…,theme=…]draws a DBML Studio diagram of a model from the folder named bymodelsin the playbook.- The frame, its host script and the named models go into the site under
_dbml/. Pages link to them relatively, so the site works from a sub-path. - Every drawn block is checked at build time. Findings are warnings, or stop the build with
validate: error.
Requires Antora 3 and Node 18 or later. antora-dbml-0.1.0.tgz below is the package exactly as published to npm. See packages/antora-dbml/README.md.
