The first sequential release since 1.1.1. Everything tried out in the 1.2 betas and nightlies, now finished. If you are on the sequential channel this is your first sight of any of it.

Updates

Version numbers say who a release is for. 1.3.0 is finished work, 1.3.1 would be a nightly, 2.0.0 would be a big release — the middle number moves for sequential releases and the last one for nightlies. Settings › Updates picks which channel you follow. On sequential you never see a nightly; on nightly you see both, checked four times as often.

Soquel can now install an update rather than only telling you about one. It downloads the release, checks it is signed by Soquel's developer, replaces this copy and offers to restart. An unsigned download is deleted and nothing is installed. Off until you turn it on.

Faulty-build notice

If the version you are running has been withdrawn, Soquel says so on launch — what breaks, with one button to install the fix and one to go back to the last good version. Both check the signature first. This is the one thing Soquel asks a server without being told to, because a withdrawn build can lose files and a warning nobody switched on warns nobody. Settings › Updates turns it off.

Finder cannot be switched off and its icon cannot be taken out of the Dock. What it can do is stop being the thing that opens: Finder starts, Soquel takes over, Finder quits, and it does not come back until something asks for it again. That covers the Dock's Finder icon and Reveal in Finder from other applications, and needs no permission.

Optionally Soquel asks Finder where it was going first, so a revealed file arrives selected — that one needs permission to control Finder, asked for by a button rather than sprung on you. Also: open a mounted disk in Soquel, and hide the desktop icons. Give Everything Back to Finder reverses all of it.

The pane says outright that macOS refuses to hand the folder type to any other application, rather than offering a switch that would quietly do nothing. docs/RESEARCH-replacing-finder.md has the measurements.

Also

  • The Git column explains itself. Hovering ? says "Untracked — Git is not following this file. “git add” starts tracking it; .gitignore hides it." The column header carries the whole legend.

Fixed since 1.1.1

  • Cancelling an install no longer installs it anyway. The button closed the window and left the download running.
  • Settings › Default App › "Open the folder Finder was going to" no longer asks for permission and then discards the answer.
  • A version from the advisory list is checked before it reaches a download URL or a file path.
