🛟 Fixed: data loss when editing a note while auto-syncing highlights
With Auto-sync on, adding a highlight while you were editing the note could drop the prose you'd just typed, falsely flag the note as "changed outside Zotero", and — on Reload — load the prose-less version, erasing your writing.
All writes to a note are now serialized (the autosave and the annotation auto-sync can no longer interleave), auto-sync skips rather than clobbers edits you make mid-sync, each write uses its own temp file, and the unsaved-edit tracking is accurate so the conflict bar no longer misfires. Auto-sync also no longer scrolls the note to the top — it keeps your scroll position and caret.
If you're on beta.16 and edit notes with Auto-sync on, please update.
✨ The Template Builder opens on your note
It now starts from the right content for the selected item instead of a generic scaffold:
- No note yet → the editor begins with your default note template (tweak it, then Create note).
- A note already exists → it loads that note so you can edit it with the builder's tools; Save to note writes it back (re-syncing its blocks).
"Save to folder" still turns whatever's in the editor into a reusable template.

✨ The Template Builder is now available to everyone
Previously behind Enable experimental features, the Template Builder ships for all users. Open it from the Template Builder… button in an item's note actions, or Build a note… from the empty state — a dedicated window to compose and edit your note & highlight templates with a clickable, context-aware palette and a live preview against the selected item.
🐛 Fixed
- Arrow keys now move the caret in the builder editor. They previously did nothing (typing and shortcuts worked, but the caret wouldn't move). The editor now handles caret navigation itself.
Also in the builder
- "Comment first" for composed annotation blocks — lead with your comment, quote underneath (list / blockquote / callout).
- Separate blocks per tag — alongside per-colour, split an annotation block into one block per tag (combine for a colour × tag grid).
- Richer updatable-field picker — formatted presets (which carry their own label, e.g. "Citation:") are grouped apart from any-field values, with a render-as hint and live/static choice.
