Mini Chess — Release Notes

v1.0.0 — First Release

A 5×5 chess variant playable against a friend or an AI opponent.

What's New

This is the first release of Mini Chess. Everything is new!

Play Modes

  • Player vs Player — Two humans play on the same machine, taking turns.
  • Player vs AI — Play against an AI opponent that thinks ahead to find the best move.

Game Menu

  • Choose your game mode from a simple dropdown before starting.
  • Set a maximum number of turns to put a time cap on the game — the game ends in a draw if the limit is reached.
  • For AI modes, configure:
    • Max time per move — how many seconds the AI is allowed to think.
    • Heuristic — the strategy the AI uses to evaluate the board (e0, e1, or e2).
    • Alpha-Beta Pruning — an optional setting that makes the AI faster without affecting its strength.

Gameplay

  • Click a piece to select it — it will highlight to confirm your selection.
  • Click the same piece again to deselect it if you change your mind.
  • Click a destination square to move. Invalid moves are rejected with a warning.
  • The board clearly shows whose turn it is at all times.
  • The game announces the winner when a King is captured.
  • All pieces are locked after the game ends so the final position is preserved.

Pieces

The following pieces are included, each with their standard movement rules:

Pawn p

Pawns are automatically promoted when they reach the far end of the board.

Known Limitations

  • The game currently runs on a single machine — online or network play is not supported.
  • There is no save or load feature in this release.
  • The AI thinking time may occasionally exceed the configured limit on very slow machines.

Requirements

  • Python 3.11 or later
  • No additional installation required beyond the standard Python package

Getting Started

python main.py

Select your game mode from the menu and click Start Game.
