OpenDawngateServer v0.9, built by this repository's build workflow from commit a6427d7.

  • v0.9.zip: Windows 10/11 64-bit. Start-Server.exe runs a server, Start-Client.exe plays. Put your own Dawngate.zip (archive.org) next to Start-Server.exe; the release contains no game file. See README.txt in the zip.
  • v0.9-linux.tar.gz: the same server for a 64-bit Linux machine (start-server, its match hosts under Wine).
  • Players and servers play together only on the same release: update both to this one.
  • The programs are unsigned (SmartScreen: More info, Run anyway; Code signing policy).
  • BUILD.txt in each archive names the commit it was built from (the source, AGPL-3.0).

What's new in v0.9

For players

  • The game downloads itself. If Dawngate.zip isn't found, Start-Client (and Start-Server) asks once and downloads it, with progress, free-space check and resume after an interruption. The file is checked against the original archive before use. A zip next to the program or in your Downloads folder is still used without asking. Mirrors can be added with game_sources in Start-Client.ini.
  • Ready-made client from your server. Servers can offer OpenDawngate-<server>.zip on their website's Download page: the release plus a Start-Client.ini that preselects and trusts that server. Unzip, start, log in.
  • gateway_pin in Start-Client.ini: a server's key can be trusted from the start, without the New server key stop at the first login. A key that differs from one you already trust is still refused.
  • Bots pick after you. In practice and PvP games (as before in custom games), bots choose their shapers and roles only after the humans have locked theirs, and avoid your shaper and role on your team.
  • PvP queue timer: 90 seconds for other players, +30 seconds per player who joins, at most 330 seconds for a full 5v5; a full match starts at once. Then bots fill the open seats.
  • Leaderboard: 10 games needed (was 50); only PvP and custom games count, as games and as wins. The screen's texts say so ("Top 200"). Earlier PvP and custom games are carried over by the server's operator (see below).
  • Crash reports stay on your PC: Start-Client answers the game's crash and error reports itself instead of passing them to the server.
  • New docs: docs/privacy.md (everything the programs send and how to switch each off), Uninstalling in playing.md.
  • The project is called OpenDawngateServer everywhere; the Windows programs show the product name and version in their file properties.

For server operators

  • Discord channel posts by webhook (off unless configured; hosting.md Discord channel posts):
    • a live PvP queue message with a countdown, edited as players join and leave, and an optional role ping (discord_queue_ping, with cooldown and minimum wait);
    • match results with the winner, duration, shapers and K/D/A (discord_result_modes, default pvp,custom);
    • the server's status on its own hook: online, going down, back after an unexpected stop.
    • Keys: discord_webhook, discord_webhook_queue, discord_webhook_result, discord_webhook_server, discord_queue_ping, discord_ping_cooldown, discord_ping_min_wait, discord_names, discord_queue_edit, discord_result_modes. Webhook addresses never appear in the logs.
  • client_package = on serves the ready-made client (the Windows release of the server's own version) on the website's Download page.
  • After updating from v0.8 or older: stop the server and run start-server --import-ranked-logs <Dawngate-Data/logs> (a dry run), check it, then add --apply. It rebuilds the Leaderboard's counts from the server's old logs, so players keep their earlier PvP and custom games. Keep log_days at 30 or more until you've run it.
  • Changed defaults: --mm-fill-after 90s (was 15s), new --mm-fill-extend 30s, --leaderboard-min-games 10 (was 50).
  • Removing a Linux server in hosting.md.

Notes

  • Code signing through SignPath Foundation has been applied for; until it's approved the programs are unsigned and Windows may warn about them.
  • A server plays only with the Start-Client of its own release: update both.
