A backup can now be opened straight from wherever it is kept. Share it from Files, iCloud Drive, Mail or Telegram, choose Reader, and it shows you what is inside — when it was made, how many books, how big — before asking whether to replace your library or merge into it. Nothing is restored until you answer.
Reader now tells the phone it is a reader for EPUB and FictionBook, rather than just one of the apps that can open them, so it should come up sooner when you open a book from somewhere else.

Photographing a page of the paper book now works when both pages of the open book are in the shot. Reader reads them one at a time instead of mixing the two together, which used to put you about ten lines from where you actually were. Photographing a single page is still the surest shot.
When only part of what you photographed matches, Reader now shows you the likely places and asks, rather than picking one and moving your place to it.

Reading a book on paper that you also have here? Photograph the page you are on, and Reader finds that passage and offers to move your place to it. The control is at the top of the screen while you read; it is not offered for PDFs yet.
It shows you what it found before it moves anything, with a little of what comes before and after, so you can hold it against the page in your hand. Once you go there, the passage is picked out on the page so you can see exactly where you have landed.
If the paper copy is a different translation, or the photograph came out badly, it tells you it could not find the place rather than guessing at one.
Moving your place this way never counts as reading you did not do — your time, streaks and finished books are left alone.

PDF books now open like any other book — a cover on the shelf, page turns, bookmarks and reading statistics. Pinch to magnify a page, or use the control at the top of the screen.
Books set in more than one typeface now keep them: a letter in a hand, a cutting in a sans, terminal output in monospace. The reading font you chose also works now on books where it quietly did nothing at all.
A book converted from a PDF arrives with every printed line as a paragraph of its own, which is what the wide gaps between words and the stray indents were. Those books are put back together now, and Smart layout turns it off for one you would rather read as it came.
Tapping a note takes you to that note, rather than to the page it happens to be printed on, and the number on the note leads back to where you were reading. Tap the page count at the bottom of the screen to go to a page.

Different editions with the same title can now be downloaded separately, and only the selected edition shows download progress. Older downloads may be added again once because their exact edition was not recorded.
Book downloads retry temporary failures and try the catalog's mirrors. A stalled connection or missing cover no longer leaves you waiting indefinitely; retries start the download again.
Pull down on a catalog error to try the request again. Refreshing shows one loading indicator, and long page titles no longer overlap the Back button.
After marking a book read today or without a date, choose a star rating or skip it. The book stays marked as read either way.

New at the bottom of Statistics: Ask ChatGPT. Preview and copy or share a request based on your reading history to discover books outside your library. Nothing is sent until you choose to share.
Rate books from one to five stars when marking them read, or change the rating later in reading history. Your ratings are saved in backups and included in ChatGPT requests.
All finished and unstarted books are selected by default, including books you marked read manually. You can leave out any books before sharing; book files, notes and bookmarks stay out of the request.

Fixed blinks and tongue gestures being refused when the camera reads your face unsteadily — lying down, or in a dim room.
Head turns are no longer paused by simply holding the phone. Only real movement pauses them now, and a knock costs a third of a second rather than the second and a bit it used to.
New under Settings → Camera: Show what the camera sees. A small readout over the page saying whether the camera can see your face and how close a gesture came — for when one does nothing and you cannot tell why.

Walking with a book open no longer turns pages by itself. Head turns now wait until the phone is holding still, and start working again a moment after you stop.
The dot at the top of the page goes hollow while they are waiting, so you can tell. Blinks and the tongue are unaffected — they work on the move as they always did.

Turn pages without touching the phone: hold a blink, turn your head, or put your tongue out. Every gesture is off until you switch it on, in Settings under Camera, and you choose what each one does.
The phone taps you when a page has turned, so you know it worked without opening your eyes.
Before you switch any of it on: the front camera runs the whole time a book is open, which costs battery. Nothing is recorded and nothing leaves the phone.

A book you have been sent goes straight onto your shelf now: tap Share wherever it arrived — Telegram, Mail, Files, a browser — and pick Reader. If it is a book you already have, it asks whether to replace your copy, keep both, or leave it alone.
Tapping a footnote no longer finishes the book. Following one to the notes at the back and coming straight back used to mark it read, date it today and file it away with the books you have finished.
An evening of reading counts as one sitting again rather than several, and what a sitting was worth is the reading you did in it instead of every jump. Sittings were too many and too short, and the hour-in-one-sitting badge now unlocks when you have earned it.
Switches, and the tick on a badge you have earned, take their colour from the page you read on instead of coming out hard black in the warmer themes.
