Highlights

• Added DataCite DOI lookup alongside CrossRef and OpenAlex, improving coverage for arXiv DOI records.
• Added OPENALEX_API_KEY support and separated API failures (UNVERIFIED) from completed searches with no match (NOT_FOUND). Transient API failures are retried up to three times.
• Reduced false author-mismatch errors for multiline BibTeX authors, Last, First names, and team-authored records. One-year publication differences remain visible as warnings.
• Improved the web tool with BibTeX paste, an OpenAlex key field, more robust parsing, and escaped result rendering.
• Added repository skills for Codex and Claude Code to install the tool, verify a bibliography, and explain findings.
• Constrained bibtexparser to its supported 1.x API so clean installs work on Python 3.11 and 3.12.

Install or upgrade with python -m pip install --upgrade bibtex-verifier==0.2.0. A free OpenAlex key is recommended for reliable batch searches; see the README for setup. A NOT_FOUND result is a request for manual review, not proof that a citation is fabricated.

Bug Fixes

False-positive ERROR corrections

• CrossRef author order (crossref_extract): authors were assembled as "Family Given" instead of "Given Family", causing the last-name extractor to pick up the given name. Fixed in both the Python CLI and the browser-side JS. This eliminated false ERRORs for entries like devlin-etal-2019-bert and hart1968formal.
• Unicode normalisation for author comparison: German ß and other diacritics were not normalised before fuzzy comparison, causing "hess" vs "Heß" to score 57% (below threshold). A new normalize_lastname() helper now converts ß→ss and strips diacritic marks via NFD decomposition. Applied in both Python and JS. This eliminated the false ERROR for hess2016real.

Report formatting

• match_score now displays as an integer (100% instead of 100.0%) in Markdown reports.

Web UI

• Added bilingual (English / 中文) language toggle to the online tool.
• All UI strings, issue messages, and the downloadable Markdown report now respect the selected language.
