Employee Lifecycle

We defined employee lifecycle as a series of stages that a worker advances through in an organization from the starting recruitment until their resignation, termination or retirement. The figure below illustrates the possible rotation in the lifecycle that we have extracted from analyzing the AMC-HR data set and applying the standardized terms for the work state. More details on the data analysis will be provided in the next sub-section.

"Employee Lifecycle"

The description for each work state is given as follows:

  1. Work. It is described as active work status.
  2. LOA. It is short for “Leave of Absence”, which is described as a period of time that one must be away from one's primary job while maintaining the status of an employee.
  3. FMLA. It is short for “Family and Medical Leave Act”, which is described as unpaid leave for qualified medical and family reasons, such as, pregnancy, personal or family illness, or military leave.
  4. STD. It is short for “Short Term Disability”, which is described as to leave from work due to a temporary disability, such as pregnancy, accidental injuries, and illness.
  5. LTD. It is short for “Long Term Disability”, which is described as to leave from work due to an extended illness or after a disabling accident.
  6. Suspend. It is described as a period of time that one is asked to not engage any work at all due to medical or health reasons or as part of disciplinary action.
  7. Terminate. It is described as a departure from a job or the end of an employee's duration with the employer.
  8. Retire. It is described as a withdrawal from one's position or occupation, usually after reaching a certain age.

Deciding a Work State

Four variables from the combined data set are used to create the decision tree for deciding the work state and they are: empstats, action, reasoncd, and Elig. The table below renders the tree in a tabular format where the path sequence (from the root to the bottom) is depicted by the first four columns from left to right, and the expected output is revealed in the last column. The '✕' character indicates a skip in the conditions, so for example, the first row states a rule that says if empstats equal to "2" then the work_state's value will be "STD", skipping the need for checking the action, reasoncd and Elig variables.
