Cut Browser 1.2.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 03 Oct 19:48

Cut Browser 1.2.2 makes About Cut Browser in Settings show Cut Browser's own updates. It's built on Firefox 157.0 and Tor from Tor Browser 15.0.24.

Which file do I need?

If you have Cut Browser 1.2.0 or 1.2.1 on Windows, you don't need a file: it installs this update by itself, within six hours, when you close it (or straight away with Restart to update in the menu).

Your computer Download
Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) Cut-Browser-1.2.2-Setup-x64.exe
Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS the amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./cut-browser_*.deb
Any other Linux (64-bit) the .tar.xz: unpack it and run ./install.sh

Installing over an earlier version keeps your bookmarks, history and settings. The Windows installer in this release isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn you the first time: choose More info → Run anyway. SHA256SUMS.txt lists the checksum of every file.

What's fixed

  • Settings → About Cut Browser said "Updates disabled by your organization" (that's Firefox's own updater, which Cut Browser turns off). It now shows Cut Browser's updates: whether it's up to date, Check for updates, the download's progress, and Restart to update when a new version is ready.
  • Release notes, in Settings. The version line shows Cut Browser's version alongside Firefox's, with What's new for the version you have. While an update waits, What's new in Cut Browser opens that version's notes, in About Cut Browser and in Settings → Cut Browser → Updates; otherwise Show update history lists every release.
  • Get help and Share ideas and feedback go to Cut Browser's GitHub, not Mozilla's.

Cut Browser 1.2.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 03 Oct 19:15

Cut Browser 1.2.1 brings back the downloads panel. It's built on Firefox 157.0 and Tor from Tor Browser 15.0.24.

Which file do I need?

If you have Cut Browser 1.2.0 on Windows, you don't need a file: it installs this update by itself, within six hours, when you close it (or straight away with Restart to update in the menu).

Your computer Download
Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) Cut-Browser-1.2.1-Setup-x64.exe
Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS the amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./cut-browser_*.deb
Any other Linux (64-bit) the .tar.xz: unpack it and run ./install.sh

Installing over an earlier version keeps your bookmarks, history and settings. The Windows installer in this release isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn you the first time: choose More info → Run anyway. SHA256SUMS.txt lists the checksum of every file.

What's fixed

  • Downloads show their panel again. When a download starts, the Downloads button appears beside the address bar and its panel opens, as in Firefox: with the download's progress, and buttons to open the file or show it in its folder. Earlier versions left the button out (Firefox leaves it off its toolbar when tabs are in the sidebar), so downloads happened without it.
  • In compact mode, a panel that opens by itself, like a new download's, brings the toolbar out with it, instead of opening off the top of the window.

Cut Browser 1.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Oct 15:56

Cut Browser 1.2 keeps itself up to date. It's built on Firefox 157.0 and Tor from Tor Browser 15.0.24.

Which file do I need?

Your computer Download
Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) Cut-Browser-1.2.0-Setup-x64.exe
Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS the amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./cut-browser_*.deb
Any other Linux (64-bit) the .tar.xz: unpack it and run ./install.sh

Installing over 1.0 or 1.1 keeps your bookmarks, history and settings. The Windows installer in this release isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn you the first time: choose More info → Run anyway. SHA256SUMS.txt lists the checksum of every file.

What's new

  • Automatic updates on Windows. Cut Browser asks GitHub for new versions every six hours. When there is one, it downloads it in the background, checks it against the release's checksums, and installs it when you close Cut Browser: your bookmarks, history, settings and extensions stay. If a Tor window is still open, the update waits until it's closed too.
  • Restart to update: when an update is ready, the menu offers to install it straight away and reopen your tabs.
  • On Linux, Settings → Cut Browser tells you when a new version is out.
  • Settings → Cut Browser → Updates shows what's happening, checks on demand, and can turn automatic updates off. The version number of Cut Browser is in Settings → Cut Browser → About, too.

This is the last update you install by hand. Install 1.2 over 1.0 or 1.1 once, and from then on Cut Browser updates itself.

Update checks contact GitHub (its API and its download servers) and send no cookies.

Cut Browser 1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Oct 14:50

Cut Browser 1.1 adds Tor windows, like Brave's private windows with Tor. It's built on Firefox 157.0 and Tor from Tor Browser 15.0.24.

Which file do I need?

Your computer Download
Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) Cut-Browser-1.1.0-Setup-x64.exe
Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS the amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./cut-browser_*.deb
Any other Linux (64-bit) the .tar.xz: unpack it and run ./install.sh

Installing over 1.0 keeps your bookmarks, history and settings. The Windows installer in this release isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn you the first time: choose More info → Run anyway. SHA256SUMS.txt lists the checksum of every file.

What's new

  • Tor windows (menu › New Tor window, or Alt+Shift+N): everything in a Tor window goes through the Tor network. Sites can't see your IP address, your internet provider can't see which sites you visit, and each site gets a Tor circuit of its own. Tor windows are always private, share nothing with your other windows, and search with Cut Search through Tor.
  • .onion sites open in a Tor window from anywhere. Addresses you type in a normal window go straight there; when a page links to one, a bar offers to open it (so no page can send your Tor window somewhere by itself), and Open Link in New Tor Window is on every link's menu.
  • .onion in the address bar when a site has an .onion address of its own (Onion-Location), as in Tor Browser and Brave. In Tor windows, Cut Browser can switch to it by itself (Settings › Cut Browser).
  • Search .onion sites: in a Tor window, Cut Search has a .onion tab that finds onion sites with Ahmia, over Tor, showing each site's whole address and when it was last seen online. Sites with child sexual abuse material are left out: Ahmia bans them from its index, Cut Search also drops every site on Ahmia's published list of banned sites, and searches for such material get no results.
  • New identity and New Tor circuit for this site, from the Tor button beside the address bar.
  • Bridges, where Tor is blocked: the built-in obfs4, Snowflake and meek bridges, or bridges of your own (Settings › Cut Browser).
  • Tor and its bridge client come with Cut Browser, so nothing is downloaded the first time you open a Tor window.

Tor windows hide where you are, but they aren't Tor Browser, which also makes everyone look the same to the sites they visit. When your safety depends on it, use Tor Browser.

Also in this release:

  • Firefox's new look. Firefox redesigned its interface in version 157. Cut Browser's interface has been updated for it: the address bar floats in the middle of the window again, and Firefox's new purple tints and gradient give way to Cut's own colors, in the browser and in Settings.
  • Works on more sites. Cut Browser now introduces itself to sites as Firefox, so sites that only let in browsers they recognize, such as YouTube Music, work. (Before, it called itself "Cut", which some sites turned away.)
  • More accurate searches. In Cut Search, results that mention more of your search rank higher, and an engine that answers for only one word of it is left out: "overtime in rocket league" finds Rocket League's overtime, not overtime pay. Wikipedia suggests only articles about your search's words.
  • Right Dao in Cut Search. A free, independent search engine with an index of its own now joins DuckDuckGo, Bing, Wikipedia and Marginalia, with no key or account needed. Its results are in English; turn it off in Cut Search's Settings → Search engines if you like.
  • Brave Search, with your own key. Cut Search can also ask Brave Search, which has an index of its own, through Brave's official API: make a key at Brave's Search API (its plans include about 1,000 searches a month), then tick Brave Search in Cut Search's Settings → Search engines and paste it. Brave sees your searches with your key, so it's off unless you add one.
  • uBlock Origin also runs in private windows (and Tor windows).

Updates

Cut Browser doesn't update itself from Mozilla (that would turn it back into plain Firefox). New versions are published here when Firefox or Tor releases security fixes; install a new version over the old one and your bookmarks, history and settings stay.

Cut Browser 1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Sep 05:46

The first release of Cut Browser: a private web browser for Windows and Linux, built on Firefox 156.0.1, with Cut Search built in.

Which file do I need?

Your computer Download
Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) Cut-Browser-1.0.0-Setup-x64.exe
Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS the amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./cut-browser_*.deb
Any other Linux (64-bit) the .tar.xz: unpack it and run ./install.sh

The Windows installer in this release isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn you the first time: choose More info → Run anyway. SHA256SUMS.txt lists the checksum of every file.

What's in 1.0

  • Zen-style layout: tabs down the side, the page as a rounded card, pinned tabs as tiles, split view and tab groups
  • Compact mode (Ctrl+Alt+C): the sidebar and toolbar tuck away and slide back when you point at the window's edge
  • Floating address bar: typing opens the address bar in the middle of the window, over the dimmed page
  • Cut Search built in: a private metasearch engine that runs on your own computer. It asks several search engines for you, without cookies or anything that identifies your browser, and they never see what you click. It's the default search and supplies the address bar's suggestions
  • Private by default: no telemetry, studies or crash reports; strict tracking protection, HTTPS-Only Mode and Global Privacy Control; no prefetching or background check-ins; AI features and sponsored content off; uBlock Origin installed on first run
  • Firefox's own settings, all still there, plus a Cut Browser section for the layout and Cut Search

Updates

Cut Browser doesn't update itself from Mozilla (that would turn it back into plain Firefox). New versions are published here when Firefox releases security fixes; install a new version over the old one and your bookmarks, history and settings stay.
