What's new

Home screen in your TV's language (by @IgorLAP in #13)

  • The labels the home screen draws itself (Settings, Add app, the hold-OK menu, the move hint, the Add/Replace panel, the network and shortcut names) now follow the TV's language.
  • 16 languages: Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Other languages stay in English, so English TVs look exactly as before.
  • The date above the clock uses the TV's own order, like "segunda-feira, 19 de outubro".
  • The hold-OK menu widens to fit longer words.
  • Change the TV's language and the home screen redraws to match.
  • To add a language or fix a translation, edit src/com/ansub/tvhome/Strings.java.

Fixes

  • On some Google TVs (like the Sony BRAVIA), Home could open Google TV's setup screen instead of TV Detox. install.sh now spots this and offers to turn that setup app off. It asks first; YES=1 doesn't cover it, so use YES_SETUP=1 to skip the question. undo.sh turns it back on, and if anything can't be turned back on, it keeps the home screen installed so the TV still has one. A new Help entry in the README has the recovery commands. Reported by @casualducko in #11, fixed by @Ansub in #12.
  • Chinese now picks Simplified or Traditional by the TV's script first, then its region. The home screen also updates when only the region changes, like zh-CN to zh-TW (by @Ansub in #15).

Contributors

  • @Ansub: the setup-app fix and the Chinese fix
  • @IgorLAP: the 16 languages and their translations
  • @casualducko: the detailed bug report behind the setup-app fix

Thanks all!

Already on an older version? Run the same command. It updates the home screen and keeps your app list.

What's new

Connection icon by the clock (by @vijayyaso in #3)

  • A small icon at the top right shows if the TV is on Wi-Fi (with signal bars), Ethernet or offline. It updates live.
  • Press it to open the network settings.
  • Optional Bluetooth, Sound and Picture shortcuts can sit next to it. They're off unless you pick them: sh install.sh <TV_IP> "" "bluetooth, sound, picture"

Uninstall and App info from the menu (by @Rozariozaro in #4)

  • Hold OK on an app you installed to get Uninstall (Android asks you to confirm).
  • Apps that came with the TV get App info instead, where you can turn them off.

check.sh: keep your TV cleaned up (by @Rozariozaro in #4)

  • TV updates sometimes switch things back on. sh check.sh <TV_IP> checks the home screen is still set up, and --fix puts it back.
  • You can also give it your own list of changes to keep.

Safer setup (by @Ansub in #6)

  • install.sh now only turns off launchers on a known list. Settings, setup apps, System UI and core TV apps are never touched.
  • It waits 15 seconds after turning a launcher off, so a quick restart can't undo it.
  • The prompt in the README has a "never turn off" list and asks the AI to restart the TV once and check it starts before finishing.
  • New Help entry: what to do if a TV gets stuck restarting.

Fixes

  • HDMI tiles open the input on Google TVs that send HDMI to Google's own input player, instead of a blank "Hello World!" screen. Reported by @arevindh in #5, fixed by @Ansub in #8. Every other TV keeps the v1.1.0 behaviour.
  • README explains why the YouTube button on the remote can stop working on some Google TVs, and what to use instead (by @Ansub in #7).

Contributors

  • @Ansub: safer setup, the HDMI fix and the README help
  • @vijayyaso: connection icon and quick settings shortcuts
  • @Rozariozaro: Uninstall / App info and check.sh
  • @arevindh: the detailed bug report behind the HDMI fix

Thanks all!

What's new

Change your home screen from the remote (by @maxgomes92 in #2)

  • Hold OK on an app (or press Menu) to open a small menu: Move, Replace or Remove from home.
  • Removing only takes the tile off the home screen. The app stays installed, and you can add it back any time.
  • New Add app tile in the bottom row, next to Settings, to pick any installed app.
  • Your changes are saved on the TV. Running install.sh again with a new app list replaces them.

Apps in rows, like Apple TV

  • Apps wrap into rows of six instead of one row. Up to twelve fit on screen at once; past that, the page scrolls down.
  • Move works in every direction: left, right, up and down through the grid.

Fixes

  • HDMI tiles now work on TVs that ship Live TV under their own name, like Droidlogic / Amlogic TVs and some Epson projectors. TVs where HDMI tiles already worked open exactly as before. (by @esteban-url in #1)
  • After removing or replacing an app, the highlight stays on the right tile instead of jumping to the end.

Contributors

Thanks to @maxgomes92 and @esteban-url for their first contributions to TV Detox!
