Release list
v0.2.0 alpha
The second alpha of the native PC port of the original Xbox version of The Warriors, with reworked audio, the game's own 720p widescreen mode, MSAA, and mouse controls for the minigames.
Warning
Alpha: only the opening missions have been played through. Expect crashes later on, and please report them.
Note
No game files or game code are included. You need your own copy of the NTSC (USA) Xbox retail disc, as an .iso or as extracted files (default.xbe sha1 fe246a74501cd10d2ce89ca5dbda5080d2b2edcc).
What's new
Audio rework
DirectSound now behaves the way the game's XACT sound engine expects:
- 3D sounds (punches, footsteps, voices, ambience) play through their submixes as on the console, at their distance, cone, front, rear, centre and reverb levels, with Doppler pitch.
- Each 3D sound is panned by its direction, with an interaural delay and a head shadow.
- Amplitude envelopes, and stops that let a sound release instead of cutting it off.
- Fixed a cause of dialogue going silent after a stopped line, which also slowly used up XACT's voices so that sounds went missing (#1, #2).
- A skipped cutscene's audio stays stopped.
Display
- 720p widescreen: on a widescreen display the game uses its own 1280x720 mode with its widescreen framing, instead of a 640x480 frame stretched to 16:9. A 4:3 display keeps 480p.
- MSAA: anti-aliasing (off, 2x, 4x or 8x) in the F10 display settings.
- The frame rate cap is gone from F10, since the game world steps at 30 FPS whatever it is set to. VSync stays.
Controls and prompts
- The lock pick and car stereo minigames play with the mouse: circle the mouse to circle the stick. While you use the keyboard and mouse, a bar on screen shows the lock pick's vibration (#3).
- The lock pick's tumblers turn at the console's speed. Before, they spun twice as fast or more, and the third could not be stopped.
- "Click the left thumbstick" now reads "Press [C]", the right stick's click names its key, the HUD's action icon shows the action key, and the prompts to alternate the triggers name each key.
Installing
- Download
Warriors.zipbelow and extract it into a new folder you can write to (notProgram Files). - Put your game's
.iso, or the extracted files withdefault.xbe, into theassetsfolder. - Run
Warriors.exe. The first start builds the game code from your copy with the bundled compiler. It takes a few minutes and happens once per release. - Press F10 in game for the settings.
Updating from v0.1.0: extract into a new folder, then copy over hdd (your saves) and settings.toml, and move your game into the new assets.
The full guide, with troubleshooting, is in the README.
Known issues
- Only the opening missions have been played.
- The game runs at its own 30 FPS.
- 3D sound panning is a model of the console's, not its own HRTF filters; LFOs, the pitch and filter envelope and the I3DL2 occlusion filters are not reproduced.
- The stick drawn by the minimap still shows the controller.
- Some HUD effects and minigames timed by presented frames may run faster than on the console.
- Only the NTSC retail release is supported.
