Test Automation Framework (TAF) can be used to create test suites that will perform automated testing of web sites with limited coding required. The Framework is written in Ruby and Watir (Web Application Testing in Ruby) - http://watir.com/
The purpose of this document is to explain how to use the framework.
A Test Automation Framework will provide the following features:
- A standardised methodology that is easy to use, learn and maintain.
- Provides powerful automated functional testing capabilities without the need for coding experienced.
- QA engineers can easily add bespoke functionality.
- Easy to incorporate into an IDE or run standalone.
- Test scripts defined in JSON file that can be organized into test folders.
- Generate data files in a universal format that define the functions to run and the data values to input and test.
- Standard function sets exist in the language of choice.
- Test results are output to console and to a junit report (.xml) for bamboo.
- Can run in dockerized Environment.
The project was scoped as follows:
- Create Test Spec template designed in HTML to document test specifications (Test Steps)
- Write a basic suite of browser interactions in Ruby
- Write functions to parse the JSON files and use the derived data to drive the Ruby program
- Provide run-time logs to show progress and assist with debugging
- Write functionality to create a directory structure for the testing output
- Output test results to files at the test specification level
- Build in the capability to capture screenshots for each test step, as defined by the tester
