Archipelago Doom version 2.0

For Doom (1993), Doom II, and Heretic

This is a new major release based upon Crispy Doom 7.1.0. It comes with a brand new Launcher, support for adding new games in the future, and a metric ton of changes and new options. For our Linux users, we now ship an AppImage with dedicated Steam Deck support. There are also Beta versions of each APWorld with even more additional features, but these are not necessary to play the game; 2.0 also supports playing games for the current, Core-verified versions of each world.

If you were using 1.2.0 previously, it would be wise to clear out your entire Archipelago Doom folder before installing Archipelago Doom 2.0. Version 2.0 is a 64-bit application, while previous versions were 32-bit applications; bad things might happen if you try to mix DLL files between the two versions. This was unfortunately necessary, because the 32-bit version of "samplerate.dll" has had antivirus false-positive reports for over a year now, and it doesn't look like that's getting resolved any time soon.

If you were using one of the 2.0 betas previously, you can freely update to the real 2.0 release without any consequences.

Changelog (from 1.2.0)

The following changelog is for players coming from the previous stable version, 1.2.0. It does not include any features which require one of the Beta APWorlds to take advantage of.

Features:

  • Updated to Crispy Doom 7.1.0; See the changelogs for Crispy Doom version 7.1.0 and version 7.0.0 for more information.
  • Archipelago Doom no longer identifies itself as Crispy Doom; for systems that use a global configuration path, Archipelago Doom will no longer clobber Crispy Doom's settings if both are installed.
  • The old, WinForms-based launcher has been replaced with a new launcher that exists in the same ecosystem as the rest of Archipelago Doom. This means it can now detect some issues (such as missing WADs) before the game is even started. It can also be fully navigated around using a controller.
  • Steam Deck is now an officially supported platform; the launcher even detects it and allows opening the on-screen keyboard for text input.
  • Chat improvements:
    • The chat box has been moved to be just below the Archipelago feed, and appears on top of the notification boxes.
    • Countdowns no longer show in the Archipelago feed, and instead appear in a separate banner over the game.
    • You can now open the chat while inside of the Level Select, instead of needing to go into a level to use it.
    • Heretic: Raised the extremely low character limit of the chat box.
  • "Hub Teleporter" improvements:
    • The Hub teleporter visually turns itself off whenever you aren't allowed to use it; for instance, in the following few seconds after using another teleporter in the level.
    • If you're standing on top of the Hub, it will wait to activate until you step off of it.
  • Archipelago's "Race Mode" is now supported. If a game is generated in Race Mode:
    • Cheats are disabled.
    • All options that modify the game's physics (such as jumping) are disabled.
    • Coordinate displays are disabled. (In Doom speedrunning contexts, showing the player's coordinates is considered cheating.)
  • New options:
    • Added options to filter out events from the Archipelago feed. There are three categories that can be filtered:
      • "Join / Leave Messages" hides messages when players join, leave, or change tags.
      • "Tutorial Messages" hides server-sent tutorial messages, like the "Now that you are connected..." message.
      • "Player Chat Messages" hides chat messages sent by players, including yourself. It does not hide server messages.
    • Added an option to change the ordering of the level select:
      • "Position": Moves through levels based on their vertical position on screen. This was the previous behavior, and is the default.
      • "Map Order (Up)": Up moves you to the next level in the episode, Down moves you to the previous level.
      • "Map Order (Down)": Down moves you to the next level in the episode, Up moves you to the previous level.
      • "Map Order (Auto)": Picks one of the above two behaviors based on the position of the first and last level in the episode.
    • Doom: Added an option to apply a shadow behind the game's HUD text.
  • Monsters are now weighted by the number of them present in the game with your current settings, meaning that easier difficulties are likely to see less strong monsters than harder ones, even in Monster Rando.
  • Random monsters and pickups are now placed in a reproducible manner. This was not previously guaranteed, and meant that two people racing the same exact seed could have differing monster layouts in the same level.
  • DeathLink now sends detailed obituary messages to your friends when you die. It will also show the reason for other players' deaths when they kill you via DeathLink, if one was provided.
  • The "Kill" option in the menu has been renamed to "Reset Level" to make its intent more clear. It now also shows a confirmation before killing you.

Bug fixes:

  • Updated APCpp, making loading into larger multiworlds much faster and more stable, and also fixing some issues where the game would crash shortly after connecting.
  • Fixed a game crash if the server sent a message with a control code in it.
  • Fixed mods that used DEHEXTRA not working (usually crashing the game).
  • Fixed issues where Monster Rando would place monsters inside of floors and break some lifts.
  • Fixed locations in the automap appearing erratically if they were too far away from the player.
  • Fixed line-based secret exits still being treated as completing the level.
  • Fixed an issue where simultaneously receiving items and a DeathLink could erroneously apply those items to the corpse instead of the player after they respawn.
  • Fixed completing a level removing all ongoing powerups from you.
  • Fixed issues drawing the intermission screens when using the "remastered" IWADs. We still don't really support them, but we may as well make them look nicer.
  • Doom / Doom II: Fixed partial invisibility state not being properly removed or restored when switching maps.
  • Doom / Doom II: Exiting the game no longer makes berserk state wear off.
  • Doom II: You will now receive some shells when respawning if you have the Super Shotgun without the regular Shotgun.
  • Heretic: Fixed issues where the player's state was being handled incorrectly if they were turned into a chicken.
  • Heretic: Fixed the Wings of Wrath going on cooldown when attempting to use them even if they didn't work.
  • Heretic: Fixed the Wings of Wrath cooldown timer being based on real time, instead of in-game time.

Changelog (from Beta 4)

The following changelog is just for things added since the last Beta version. Archipelago Doom continues to be backwards compatible with games generated with earlier versions of the Beta APWorlds as well.

  • Launcher updates:
    • Controls are now displayed at the bottom of the screen, with icons that update based on what type of controller is being used.
    • If using a Steam Deck, the Launcher is now capable of opening the on-screen keyboard, instead of expecting you to do that yourself.
  • Doom II: Weapon logic was changed around a bit to help encourage some more variety in weapon placement and seed progression.

As a reminder, ap_gen_tool, the tool for creating new Archipelago Doom worlds, now has its own repository and documentation.

Worlds

Current, future, and past Beta APWorlds can be grabbed from the Archipelago Doom Worlds Index. They can also be downloaded below like usual, but I would strongly recommend using the Index instead, as it contains proper versioning information that this releases page lacks.
